WR Juanquin \"Julio\"* IglesiasI believe this kid has been upgraded to a 3 star 5.5 rated player by Rivals although they haven't even done a report on him-very unusual for Rivals. 6-2-195 4.5 from Killeen. Between SMU and UTEP who have offered with OU being shown as a team with interest. Maybe-just guessing they bumped him up because he is visiting OU or something. Rumor has it he will be visiting SMU soon. * (represents the intellectual property of Stallion LLC and any unauthorized use of such property without its expressed written consent is strictly prohited)
JUAQUIN it is. Nice catch.
And yes, he's coming in this weekend, I believe. Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
just to claify-Joaquin is the teammate of Columbus Givens-one of the targets I mentioned the other day. Columbus was District MVP at QB(probably not his college position) and was 49 of 88 and rushed for 951 yards on 91 carries for 10.5 per attempt. Note that Juaquin caught well over half of Given's passes which were few and far between with 28 catches for 556 yards and 19.9 ypc as a Senior. Joaquin actually had a better Junior year with 44 catches for 682 yards. But the fact that Joaquin caught about 60% of his teams passes suggests that he could be much more dangerous in a more wide open offense.
see I've been following recruiting services so long that I can sense when somthing may be up. Rivals just published its first report on Iglesias supporting the increase in his rating. The report calls him a "mystery receiver", one coach calls him "the real best receiver in Texas" and another calls him a "super sleeper". HOWEVER, the report says he is CURRENTLY COMMITTED TO UTEP and NEVER MENTIONS SMU. It does say he is climbing up the receiver charts for OU and he has scheduled an official visits on 1/21 with OU. He said if OU offered it would be hard to turn down. Greedy Bastards!!!!!!-OU already has three 4 star WRs committed.
demonstrates opur coaches do a really good job of finding and evaluating the talent. Also, tells me all I need to know about Rivals "star" system. As soon as a "big" school gets interested....his rating goes up overnight without any personal viewing of film on the prospect.
Makes me very comfortable with the prospects that come in for visits. SMU...2nd to None
if OU offers this kid instead of the other 4 and 5 star recruits it could offer then OF COURSE his rating should go up. That's what recruiting rankings are all about-getting the top recruits that other teams are after. If a premier passing school like OU wants the kid despite commitments from three other 4 star recruits you can bet your [deleted] their pretty high on him. Yes it means more when Bob Stoops offers over other 4 star option compared to when Phil Bennett offers a kid who is considering Sacramento St. Get over it! I do agree that I feel that Bennett appears to be always on top of the top athletes that magically seem to rise in the eyes of the recruiters. That could be a compliment to his talent evaluation. Unfortunately, his ability to close the deal on thos "super sleepers" at least after the last two years season records is still at issue.
I don't know that anyone has demonstrated repeated ability to close on the "super sleeper" when Daddy Warbucks (national BCS schools)comes a calling.
Bennett can recruit with the best. Our best shot is getting the "best of the rest", trying to keep our two star prospects "quiet" and off the radar. P.S. I continue to find it humorous that Rivals can upgrade a player simply because OU calls for an officialvisit and Rivals, iwithout seeing any film on the prospect, upgrades him because OU must be better evaluaters of talent. Shows that Rivals panders to BCS schools. We need a sixteen teamplayoff system that includes CUSA as an automatic berth. Access is all that is needed for us to recruit toe-to-toe with the existing BCS schools. SMU...2nd to None
But here's the flaw in your argument. WHO CARES HOW RIVALS EVALUATES A PLAYER. The coaches are the experts who should be relied upon by Rivals so that when a coach like Stoops who probably could go out tommorrow and offer and get commitments from 30 players rated higher than our best recruit, says he is worth an offer then the recruiting services relying on Stoops should raise his rating. By the way when you make comments like we got a lot more players on OUR board who we like better than X recruit you do realize don't you that if Bennett had the option to take the players OU does then I'd be surprised if there were 3 players on our present team that Bennett would have offered. The Phil Bennett Board which BTW doesn't have a single player remaining on it except maybe Stephen Hodge who is considered one of the Texas Top 100 is not the proper judge of top recruits. How can it be when NONE of the top recruits in the state are left on his board.
It is what you point out, Stallion, in one of your previous posts that gives us all some hope. Bennett does not often close the deal on the best of these guys, but he is always there, and usually early. If we can get just a little postiive W/L traction, I think his hit ratio will go way up, although lets face it, BCS will get most, and we will have to be resigned to beating the rest to the remainders. Tell me if you disagree, but we should still be able to get a top 50 class with the talent in Texas - in the event we get a little more traction and aren't recruiting off of 4 wins in 24 months.
Yes I think consistent top 50-60 classes would get SMU consistently into bowls-at least. (note the present class is likely to finish in the 80s in average rating per recruit) Also, I do think Bennett is a good evaluator-and he gets a good number of top kids to at least express early interest. A lot of times that's a sign that a school is jumping on kids early-when they are flattered to get any attention by anybody. I bet there are at least 25 Texas Top 100 players who early on expressed interest in SMU. The killer is that 0-11 season and more to the point that 15 years later we are still fiddling with important changes-3 years into a coaching regime-that should have accomplished in 1989. We still have yet more changes that need to be made. JUST GET ON WITH IT and realize that we should be competing under the same rules as the teams we play against. Right now Bennett is fighting the perception that SMU is a loser. Just like Rice and TCU were considered pathetic losers when I was growing up-(BTW I still consider Rice a pathetic loser as do most because they have not been to a bowl or NCAA Tourney in a combined 78 years). We may have to at least crawl to the .500 mark before we can even start to think about really building a Bowl or championship team just from the perception alone. At least Bennett I think realizes that he's got to change the perception immediately and therefore is trying to sign the best player availiable whether in JC, CC or prep school.I still believe even there Bennett is still being rather significantly handicapped.
