Shane SheadLooks like we still have a shot at Shead
"A school that's a good fit," he said. "I wouldn't mind redshirting, but I would like playing time when I am a sophomore. Academics will play a big part. I want a good student-teacher ratio too." Shead also named a few favorites. "Probably North Carolina State, Clemson, SMU and Texas Tech," he said. "All of them have defenses that like to get after you. North Carolina State has a great reputation at defensive end with their rushers, and so does Texas Tech. My sister plays basketball for SMU. I'm around the campus all of the time, and my parents could see me play there."

DE 6'5'' 225LBs 4.6 forty As a backup last year he had 18 tkls and 5 sacks. 2005 to date he has 11 tackles and according to rivals 25 sacks...willing to bet that is supposed to be 2.5 sacks. Just an aside, sophomore year he played WR for Bishop Lynch...I would love a 6'5'' WR!
4.6 is smokin' for a guy who could (will) add a bunch of weight as he matures. And it sounds like he didn't play a lot last year, but if 5 of his 18 tackles were sacks .... I'd say he sounds pretty impressive. Hopefully his sister can convince him of the idea of staying home.
Tlhis kid is a tremedous athlete who can accomplish anything he sets his mind to. I have no doubt he could be an incredible linebacker or speed rusher from the end for us. Speed, strength, size. Downside? He leaves his motor in second gear too much. If he ever decides to "bring it" every play, look out.
sheadShane went to the same private school as me when I was younger, I didn't get to know him well because he was many grades below me, but a really good kid overall, and looks like a damn good DE prospect to me. But we're so loaded at that position for the future, don't know if he can get the playing time as a soph. he's looking for, I could definitely see him getting good PT here as an upperclassman though
We're too deep? Can you be too deep? Don Ieremia-Stansbury is graduating. Justin Rogers will be back, and barring something drastic will maintain that starting spot. But we're still learning what Troy Therien can and can't do, we're waiting for the football ability to catch up to the athleticism with Jamar Bey and Kyle Griffin is still very young. This absolutely sounds like a guy who we should be going after hard.
If a player can not crack our starting defensive line by soph. year then he will not be playing for very many others as a Soph. That is not meant to be offensive in any way to our current players. Just a statment of fact.
yeahI agree that you can never be TOO deep, but as far as guaranteeing him you can play him by his soph. year...can't do it...who is he going to be ahead of??? Not Justin Rodgers, Not Corey Muse, or any of the above mentioned
Re: yeah
The point I am making is that unless he wants to go to a 1AA or Division II school, he will have the same predicament whereever he goes. There are not many schools around that are not using Defensive Ends so he can come in and play. He is either good enough to move ahead of the others, or he sits. That is at SMU or any other school he may choose. If he is not good enough to play at least equal to Rodgers and Muse maybe we should look a little harder for a good DE. Depth is not just numbers, it is good numbers. We need to have players on the sideline chomping to get in AND able to perform when they do. When you can interchange and have no drop off then you have depth. And on offensive and defensive lines, 3 deep is not too deep.
