makes sense-probably wanted to go to a small private school with quality academics in a mid range conference in the beautiful state of Oklahoma. Plus, he can party in Dallas on his trip to and back from school every vacation break. Hell Tulsa could charter a bus with all the recruits from the Metroplex that Todd Graham is taking from right under our noses. I know we didn't want him....Remember what Phil Bennett said in the LA Times article "The SMU job is a hidden gem" because of the "recruiting goldmine in the Dallas Metroplex". Unfortunately, SMU is getting shut-out.

This kind of things always amazes me. Its not like Tulsa is even identifiably a better program, and this guy could make serious business contacts playing right here in Dallas, instead of being lost in tin buck two. Worse school, worse town, worse parties, worse women, worse facilities, neutral at best on the program - I don't get it.

Amen, stang.

The local recruiting is baffling-- especially when you lose to Tulsa... Tulsa... my gosh...

did you mention facilities? What about facilities? How does Tulsa ever take a recruit from us now?

In this case I bet that Todd Graham is friends with Harrells dad, but still, come on.

Actually, it does make sense. Tulsa has done a great job of getting Juco and D 1 transfers the last few seasons. They have relaxed their admission requirements for the players and it shows with the talent they are putting on the field. I believe SMU is having a hard time getting players to commit is because they just do not believe SMU is dedicated to winning football. It is obvious the players are not confident the school is backing the team. Do you blame these kids for spurning SMU? What has the team done in the last twenty years? While SMU is jerking around with their stupid admission rules, our competition is stealing players in our own backyard. It happens every year. Question? where is the Juco QB Bennett was going to sign?

I think other coaches are selling the stability of their programs over SMU. Kragthorpe, Dickey, and Patterson have all won with their programs, and appear willing to stay for a few years. First, this year, Bennett was rumored to be getting canned. Then, he probably goes and interviews for K-State.

Smart coaches use this kind of thing against other schools in recruiting.

Gee, ya' think? Coaches recruit "against" each other all the time -- that's as old as the game itself. How many different threads to you need to bring up Coach Bennett's uncertain job status in October and then the K-State rumors before you let it go? Apparently, despite your claims that you've "met Coach Bennett and he's a nice fella," or however you phrased it the 1,653rd time you re-hashed this theory, you're disappointed that Coach Bennett has this team on the right track, we beat a better group of opponents this year than we have since the 1980s. No, we're not in a bowl game yet. Yes, we still have a long way to go. But it's happening, and Coach Bennett and his staff are steering the ship. Your insight is about as timely as the news that the NCAA changed up our plans in 1987. Stop it.

Casey,

Why do you think we are being beat for Texas prospects by Tulsa (not Big 12 schools)? I look forward to hearing your keen insight. Sorry for attempting some analysis.

We never visited him and he never visited us. Obviously, the question is was he ever interested in us, and were we really interested in him?

We will see who we end up with at QB. If we end up with JUCO QBs signing later in the process, it means we weren't really interested. If we end up recruiting other HS QBs now, it would indicate that we were keeping a scholarship open for him and, indeed, lost him to Tulsa.

Should maybe a question be, how many freshman quarterbacks do we want? I know stallion will rag on me for saying this but we do have a commitment from a high school quarterback (Zac Rhodes) that we offered and got a commitment from LAST SUMMER that we apparently liked more than Clark Harrell. You never know and I don't know but he may have committed to Tulsa since we didn't have a place for him here. OK, now everyone be negative and say the sky is falling.

the sky is falling... i did notice watching utah that the hot tandem were to former no cal boys from jucos burning ga. tech. I'd be glad to see the Ponies land another decent juco qb.

its not just Clark Harrell, who I admit is not the second coming. Its more the seemingly 10-15 area kids that have gone to Tulsa over the last 2-3 yrs who were either offered by us, listed us, or had the type of size, speed and talent that could have helped SMU. The DL from Cedar Hill comes to mind, cant remember names.

Of course, since we've hardly really beaten a group of opponents since the 80s, we have to take this accomplishment with a grain of salt, follwed by a shot of tequila.....
