To me, this is one of the statistics that sometimes gets skewed. Most of the times we see are not the speed that we'll see on game days, of course, because many of them are timed on a track (as opposed to grass) in shorts and track spikes. However, with that in mind, how's this?
QB Zach Rhodes
4.38

I'll take it.
Interestingly enough, I heard about this guy in early August, in East Texas Sports Center out here. One of their salesmen is a SMU alum and old personal buddy of Coaches Bennett (Jerry, Jim, & Phil) from their days back here in East Texas. He mentioned this guy was a real player, and he was looking forward to seeing how he developed during his senior year.
Now, I won't validate a 4.38 40 yard dash (PonyPride, you point is well-taken), but I'd sure like it. Makes me more comfortable about the longevity & depth of the position, redshirt freshman, controversial (at least to some on the board) JUCO QB, and all.

Not sure where you got your time, but he ran a 4.76 at the combine.

That is a big descrepency, even so a 4.76 for a QB isn't bad, he probably is somewhere in the middle too, I would guess high 4.6. I mean this guy is obviously talented, and his speed is above average for a QB even if it is 4.7.

Got it from Rhodes and confirmed with his coach.
And yes, he ran it on a track, in spikes.

Would still take it. He signed early, had a good senior year, was not injured, and has good physical stats (if accurate).
Either time would be fine.

I don't care if he ran it off the side of a cliff -- 4.38 is smokin'.
Once a Mustang, ALWAYS a Mustang!

He is not a 4.38 guy. Probably a hand timed or some such, because that is too much difference from the "official" time he ran, plus he hasn't done anything close to that in competition.

Don't know -- I've never seen him. Just reporting what I learn.
I have talked to two guys who played against him (at different schools) who completely unprompted by me called him the fastest QB they'd played against.

Many of the 40 times out there are hand-timed.
We don't know anything about the conditions (or his health) when running the "official" times.
Personally, I like the 4.38. Hope he's close to that.

he's probably somwhere in between. As I previously posted he is a track guy medaling in the unusal combination of the Discus and 100 Meters. I've seen times posted in the 100 Meters where he finished 3rd each time in District type meets and clocked a 11:08 and 11:22 but 4.38 would put him among probably the Top 10 recruits in Texas and MANY MANY had better times than that. For example, the Texas 5A Track & Field 100 Meters was won with a time of 10.66 by Matt Harding-who visited SMU last year but went to Tulane. And 10.66 was a slow time as about 7 guys in lower Texas classifications beat that time by as much as .3. The times I've seen would not put him in that class. I bet he's faster than the 4.76 time though.

I will take a QB running a 4.6-4.7 any day if he is a decent pocket passer. Heck, a 4.7 seems like blazing speed compared to the juco QB with a 4.97 40 time that just committed. What are you supposed to time him with, a sundial????

For what its worth, Rivals has Rhodes running the forty in 4.5 seconds. I would think that is probably pretty close
