SMU Sr. Day football camp approaching 350 in numbersA GREAT turnout for SMU football camp....including some fabulous players from all over the State! SMU is getting good looks from really good players from all over the State. The camp is today at Ford.
Hold on.....I can hear Hank Williams warming up...."Are you ready for some football?" SMU...2nd to None
I was told that including walk-ups, the camp drew just over 400 campers today.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
The more players are on campus, the better our chances of landing some good ones. I didn't know the exact number, but I was told that we had about 100 more than last year -- well done.
The BCS schools limit the number that they INVITE to their senior camps. That enables them to better evaluate a smaller select group. How could our staff possibly evaluate over 400 players? They can't.
I think that SMU focuses on certain players to invite, but I believe they send out mass invitations to a lot of schools and open lt up to anybody that will to pay to attend. A lot of the kids that attend aren't even considered prospects. It is not about the number that attend, it's about evaluation and getting your real prospects on campus We probably had more attend our Senior Day Camp than most of the BIG 12 schools.. Quality is a different story?
Of course. There are some players who are targets the second they walk on campus (like McCoy, I assume), and I'm sure you're right that some players are invited (as opposed to just signing up), and subsequently are watched more closely by our coaches. There are HS coaches who work the camp with the SMU staff, and I assume that the truly unknown (low-priority) players are pawned off on HS coaches while our coaches try to get close to the top players.
Success for a Sr Day Camp should be measured by how many of our real prospects did we get on campus and were able to evaluate. The total number of attendees is not a measure.
I would rather be told that we had 50 of our 80 propects attend rather than we had 400 attend "from all over the state."
I think SMU has a junior/senior camp in June and they just had the Senior Camp last Saturday. They also have a 7-7 tourney and a lineman challange in June and also a 3 day camp for HS palyers in June. I don't know if this is all the NCAA allows or not. In SMU's case, I am sure that these camps are open for anybody, although they do invite their top prospects, I think the BCS schools limit some of their camps to INVITE only. Could be wrong.
never before has SMU had a higher percentage of the State's best players on campus for one event or another as anyone with a Rivals subscription knows because of the hundreds of prospect pictures with Ford Stadium in the background-and yet SMU appears to be struggling once again in comparison to other state schools. Wjatever happened to "If we can just get them on our beautiful campus..."
