The game had plenty of star moments in it but we'd be hard pressed not to talk about the workmanlike effort Frank Otis gave his team. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound forward from Oakland (Calif.) McClymonds High School made an otherwise lackluster first half seem important to his teammates. His hustle, rebounding, high-low work in the post and simplicity helped his team come out to an early lead.

Frank Otis- Already with a high-major body, Otis displayed some nice perimeter skills, handling the ball in the open court and making good decisions in the scoring area. A strong defender and rebounder, Otis does need to improve his shooting range. He has the makings of a powerful combo forward.

I second that notion. I think its great Coach Doh is hitting the recruiting trail in Detroit, So Cal, Bay Area, Chi-town etc...And to all the people who are going to moan about Doh not getting enough players from TX or Dallas, the high school b-ball in those parts of the country are just as good if not better than TX. I can't wait until Doh gets a couple of ballers from NYC to the hill top ...

If DISD and the TX AAU establishment don't want their guys coming to SMU then fine...I have faith in Doh's ability to recruit nationally and find the players he needs to make the Mustangs a perenial tournament team.
After all we know he bascially recruited all of the players on UNC 's last national championship team

Frank Otis, the 6-foot-6 combo forward from McClymonds High School in Oakland had a very successful spring and summer campaign on the club circuit. Playing for the Loyalty All Stars out of Dallas Texas in the spring and then the Oakland Soldiers and Norcal Pharaohs in the summer, Otis impressed college coaches with his inside/outside versatility and ability to make plays with the ball around the basket.

Because of his play, the combo-forward has various offers from schools throughout the country, including Creighton, Southern Methodist, Cal Poly SLO, Cal State Fullerton, Morgan State, Utah, Baylor, Sac State and George Mason. Nevada, Marquette, Villanova, USF, Cal and San Diego State are also in the picture.

"I am just looking for a school with good coaching, a school that plays up and down and a school that fits the way that I play," said Otis.

Otis' recruiting picked up after his play at Reebok U camp in Philadelphia. The camp featured most of the top players in the country and Otis' play was very solid.

"A lot of these schools that have offered me saw me play at Reebok U," said Otis. "I played pretty cool out there, even though they had me playing out of position. They had me playing a power forward and whenever I needed to score I had to go and get the ball for myself."

With his phone ringing off the hook, Otis has no current leader and is wide open according to his father, Frank Sr. "Right now, I think he has to make the right decision for himself," said the elder Otis. "I just want him to be happy."

Frank Sr. said the schools recruiting his son the hardest are SMU and Creighton and he may take official visits at both schools in the next few weeks. However, both he and his son said a decision on a school would probably come during the late signing period.

"I will probably make a decision in the late period," said Frank Jr. "Just because I can stay focused on the season."

Last year, Otis (nicknames "Mook") was the centerpiece for a McClymonds team that went 27-5, won the tough Oakland Athletic League and NorCal Div. I titles. A very versatile player, Otis played inside and out for the Warriors.

"We went with a big line-up at the start of the season playing with Frank Otis on the wing," said Dwight Nathaniel, McClymonds' head coach. "He was giving us a solid season out of him with about 15 points and 11 rebounds a game. But when we made our run for the state title game, we put him on the block and established our inside presence, his numbers increased."

In the state championship game, McClymonds lost against Fairfax High from Los Angeles. In that game, Otis was double and triple teamed every time he touched the ball. This year, Otis believes the Warriors have a chance of getting back to the title game.

"If we work hard enough, we can make that run again," continued Otis. "Damon Powell, one of the top junior forwards in Oakland, is back at out school. And at the guard spots, we have Will Cherry and Demario Sims."

One of the keys to making another run will no doubt be Otis, who may be the strongest inside player in Northern California. Coach Nathaniel has said he will use Otis' strength and size inside to rebound the ball, but he will also play him in a lot of other positions on the court.

"Mook has shown he can play in a multitude of positions instead of just down in the block and we will use his versatility," said Coach Nathaniel. "He has the ability to rebound the ball and then push the ball and start the break, like a point guard."

With his verstaility, Otis has become a top target for several schools. We will keep you updated on his recruitment and upcoming season at McClymonds.

Head Coach Matt Doherty and Southern Methodist landed a verbal commitment from Oakland, Calif. power forward Frank Otis, reports InsideBayArea.com. "Coach Doherty came out here to Oakland three times and showed how much he wanted me," Otis said. "Going to SMU is, overall, a great opportunity." The 6-foot-6 bruiser chose the Mustangs over Creighton.

I wonder how many recruits Bennett makes it to see 3 times outside of the DFW area, much less in Cali. Hell, the way we recruit, I wonder how many recruits Doherty sees three times outside of HP.

National recruiting gives a private school a broader group of schools to pull from. We ought to be combing cities like NY, DC, Detroit, Chicago and northern California. I think you mean our football coach should have been paying attention to this. But in about 6-8 weeks, it won't matter.

It helps your program when your name coach has a ton of contacts nationwide and can get into areas that we would haver never touched before. Sounds like an interesting prospect. Good size.

And if the DISD coaches want to hold the Tubbs thing over our heads and not give Doherty the time of day, then that's their problem.

Admittedly, we could have and should have a better relationship with the DISD, but it's a two-week street.
