SMU alum Kevin Lonnquist of The Dallas Morning News reports:

"Denton Ryan quarterback Justin Willis isn't going to make people forget James Battle, the school's former all-state passer. But Willis doesn't have to make any excuses for his play. The senior is one of the area's best quarterbacks.

QB Justin Willis, 6-1, 195, Sr.: Another year of experience can only help this savvy player. Has exceptional arm strength."

Rivals gives Hodge a 5.6 rating and says that he is in the top 35 players for the State. Also lists him as the 29th best athlete in the nation. He has thrown for 3 touchdowns and ran for 3 touchdowns in the first two games of the season. Tatum is now 2-0 and defeated state champion St. Augustine 48-0 last week. He is listing us with Missouri, Texas A$M, Baylor, Houston, and Louisiana Monroe as possibilities. All have offered EXCEPT SMU! (Maybe our admissions policy is getting in the way.) He hasn't scheduled any visits yet because he has been too busy preparing for the season. Reportedly, he has missed a lot of calls from various coaches, but he has been relatively unknown nationwide. Sounds like the coaches need to get after this kid and make him a Mustang soon before everyone else really discovers him!

Rest assured that this kid is no secret. Texas coaches all know about him, as do many out-of-state coaches. He'd be a great addition, but it will require a hell of a sales job by the coaches (and players).

I've seen highlites of Justin Willis from Denton Ryan numerous times both this year and last on the Friday Nite highlite shows etc and I question whether he really is a Division 1A QB prospect-maybe he's being offered as an athlete. It mentioned above he had a strong arm but I've seen more than a few flutter balls from him. He looks to be 6-0 not 6-2 and he appears frail. Can't argue with his success though.

I've seen Willis play, and he is far from frail. In fact, I thought he was tough as nails running the ball. He makes alot of impressive plays, but I wouldnt call him a pure passer or anything.

What do you think about offering SLC Todd Dodge's QB son, now, while he's on the JV & nobody has found him, yet on Rivals???

Anyone notice that Battle (who was interested with SMU and is at TCU now, their 4-star recruit that pulled that years' class even with ours) is 4th string? It'll happen when you balloon up 30lbs over the summer...

I don't disagree with your contentions outlined above.

I heard that Battle now weighs in at about 245-that might have a little bit to do with his lack of playing time.

His weight is down now. He has a newborn son and kind of got off track, but has turned the corner. Look for big things in the future from him.
