See Update above on Thompson from Mineral Wells paper
I can't believe that with all the success this kid has had on the football field, the track and the classroom at the 4A Level that this guy can't get anybody to make an offer after Iowa and Iowa St withdrew theirs while we have recruits who have fought off about 20 of the finest Division 1-AA, NAIA, Ivy League and Division II schools in the country for their commitment. His coach is a famous former SWC star at UH so I keep thinking it will be the Cougars but surely we have offered this kid.
Wow, didn't know Bourquin was at Mineral Wells now. He was my high school coach at Weatherford back in the day. Didn't really care for him much, and he didn't last long after I graduated. Had a bunch of success at Graham I think, guess he worked that into a job at Mineral Wells, though I don't see Miserable Wells as any great coaching gig, that town is a hole.
I heard the same thing, that we do have one left. Not sure who it's earmarked for, though.
Seeing as how we have pretty much gone through the Top 100, with some exceptions, my admittedly parochial vote goes to giving the scholarship to Justin Smart of Marshall. Didn't sign...something is going on in his family...illness or something that prevented from making either the end of year banquet or the signing ceremony held in Marshall's field house. He is/was a linebacker...He is a leader and a gamer. Dimensons are 6 feet 2 inches...230 lbs...4.6 forty. Not rated by rivals, but I rate him high and definitely division 1.
Just MHO. Otherwise, we should simply hold on to it.
Justin Smart never signed? I've seen that kid play -- he's pretty nasty. Strong kid, too. I'd be completely comfortable with him in Red & Blue!
Hopefully this doesn't offend young Mr. Thompson, but is anyone else surprised that Mineral Wells has an athletics message board?
Know what the sad thing is? It wouldn't shock me if that board has more active posting members than pf.com.
apparently, Thompson will sign with West Texas A&M today. I'm baffled and puzzled as are many across the state how a kid so productive on the field at the 4A level, so successful in the classroom and so blessed with proven speed on the track and with nice height could not snare a scholarship offer from some of the poorest recruiting classes in the country residing right here in the good ole CUSA West. This one will be a name too watch.
more on the Thompson saga-apparently SMU didn't think it necessary to even make an effort they are so happy with their No. 107 ranked recruiting class

This year called for players at specific positions (i.e. linebacker) and signing Fleps, Sowe, Hurst, Bon and Strodtman addressed a more pressing need than adding another running back to a group that already includes Martin, Mapps, Dorsey, Massey, Fitzgerald and Turner. I'm sure Thompson is a talented kid, and if he does well at West Texas State A&M Tech U., I assume he'll transfer up. I'm willing to bet our coaches know about this guy, and undoubtedly have a thorough evaluation of him, since earlier stories had SMU listed as one of the schools showing interest. But they have to balance the players they can get against the needs they have to fill, rather than following someone else's ratings. As one of the coaches said in the Recruiting Roundup, that's one thing that's impressive about our staff - they don't give a damn what you or I or recruiting sites or other schools think of a player. They make their own evaluations. And as for "being happy with their 107th-ranked class" .... a class can't be rated for a few years, and again, the coaches don't care how outsiders rate their class. Neither do the coaches at OU or UT, other than as a number they can throw out there to excite their fans.
Our coaches addressed needs in this year's class, and they're to be commended for that.
