MIKE DEET-KA...yes, he would put a 400lb-er in the backfield.
And woe unto him that tries to tackle him. He may be brought down, but...DOH...that'll leave a mark.
DALLAS - The 2006 Rivals.com Junior Day events certainly bring in some top prospects where little evaluation is done and several up-and-coming players get the chance to learn about what's ahead in recruiting.
However, like any day full of top football prospects, there is still some evaluation that can be done with only verified height and weight numbers. Many college coaches use the eyeball test on players around the country to verify just how big these talented young men not only are today, but in the future as well. Below are the top five players that passed the eyeball test this past weekend in Dallas for the first Rivals.com Junior Day for 2006. 1. Terrael Williams, Dallas Skyline, OT, 6-6, 407 – If anyone present missed one of the biggest high school players in the state walk through the doors at Southern Methodist University, they paying enough attention. Williams weighed in at an astonishing 407 pounds. His height also makes him a player that can hold that weight without looking out of shape, though he'll have to get that down in the coming months. Considering he currently claims offers from Oklahoma and Kansas State, it's obvious that coaches believe his size will take him places at the Division I level. Watch out, because his coaches at Skyline believe that he has incredible flexibility for his size that will take him far. 2. Richetti Jones, Dallas Lincoln, LB, 6-3, 234 – In the last 24 hours, no one made a more astonishing jump in the height and weight measurements than Rivals.com pre-evaluation Rivals100 member than Jones. As a junior at the NIKE Training Camp, he came in at 6-foot-2, 201 pounds. Since then he's grown an inch to stand at 6-foot-3 and come in at a very lean 234 pounds. Jones' will play all over the field for a defense and his growth furthers the talk about the possibility of him sharing time in college at defensive end along with linebacker. 3. Tray Allen, South Grand Prairie, OT, 6-4, 305 – As a junior, Allen was used to weighing in at around the 275 to 290 pound mark. When the scale hit 305, he thought that it couldn't have been correct. It was but don't confuse this with bad weight. Allen looked about as in shape of any of the prospects on hand above 250 pounds. His quick feet, that have drawn so much attention since starting his career at South Grand Prairie, do not look like they'll be hurt by some more pounds. It's obvious that the Rivals100 member can move around with his weight and not get too big. 4. Anthony Morgan, Lancaster, DT, 6-3.5, 336 – When highly coveted defensive tackle prospect Stephen Thomas made his transfer to Lancaster, the coaches caught a glimpse of the ability of his new teammate Morgan. During some off-season workouts on their own time, Morgan and Thomas were going head to head in competition for reps during some heavy weight lifting. It's pretty obvious that the 336 pounds that Morgan was holding was more than just big bones. The defensive tackle prospect seems to be slimming down and thickening up as his junior year is coming to an end. Morgan is one prospect to watch for during the recruiting cycle for 2007 as he continues to get even bigger. 5. Anthony Hamm, Red Oak, OL, 6-6, 354 – The sleeper of the group, Hamm came into the process virtually unknown. That was at least until he showed up. A wide-eyed group of people were looking at the huge offensive tackle. While he may be somewhat of an early sleeper, that should change as he plans to make his way to camps at Texas, Nebraska, and Texas Tech. Hamm, who is already big enough for the college level, describes himself simply his playing style as "hard hitting." He certainly looks the part of a Division I offensive tackle and put himself on the radar at the junior day event.
Here's more from Rivals...nice pic of the recruits at Ford
DALLAS - Leave it to Texas to do things big. The Rivals.com Dallas Junior Day brought many big names. The first 2006 Rivals.com Junior Day definitely was a packed house with around 300 prospects, accompanied by coaches and parents, making their way to Southern Methodist University this past Saturday. While there were several prospects just getting started on their recruitment, there were several that are having no problem picking up early offers. Three prospects that definitely aren't worrying too much about interest include well-known Metroplex stars Richetti Jones and Tray Allen. Those two are joined by one rising star who's name is making the rounds around to several colleges. That name is John Chiles, the talented athlete from Mansfield Summit who has made waves since transferring over from Carrollton Ranchview. Though he plays quarterback, he's gathered offers not only for his abilities behind center, but his ability to be a solid Division I athlete. Chiles says that coming to the event was big for him in that he got some questions in and also got to meet some top players from around the state. "Just listening to the guys talking about the process and hearing what other players around here are going through, you learn a lot," Chiles said. "I was wondering about eligibility and also what an official visit is and all that." "I got all those questions answered here." Chiles also says he sees himself as a quarterback, but playing wide receiver is also something he'd be interested in. Watch for his stock to rise over the next few months. His offer list is already impressive and includes Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Rice and Central Florida. Allen wants to decide late It's hard to tell how many offers Tray Allen will ultimately end up with. However, it's a safe bet that it will be numerous. Five offers from Big 12 schools are only the beginning and Allen says that he doesn't want to stretch things out until the very end. However, a late decision to possibly announce at an all-star game has him very interested. "I'm going to wait this whole thing out," Allen said. "I mean the chance to play with some top players around this area and in the country, and then making my decision live on television is exciting. Any player would want to do that. "If I have that chance, I'd like to do that." Jones' stock is skyrocketing What a week can do for a high profile recruit like Dallas (Texas) Lincoln linebacker Richetti Jones. Just days ago he was only holding three offers but now Nebraska and Oklahoma have joined the mix with two more. "I don't know much about Baylor and Nebraska, but I will," Jones said. "There are a lot of schools that you'd like to see off, but then again, I like what I have so far. I know those schools are interested." Aside from his success with offers, there was some talk from Jones that a December graduation could be possible. Though nothing is certain, it appears that academically he is doing just fine to say the least. Texas gunslinger thinking ahead It's never a bad thing when you've got the talented of quarterback G.J. Kinne and your father was just elevated to the position of a college assistant coach. While many believed that when Kinne's father, Gary Joe Kinne, took the linebacker's position with Baylor, that the Bears would be a frontrunner. All along, Kinne has said that even though it would be nice to be with his dad, some other schools have made their high interest known. Kinne said that he has taking a liking to Oklahoma coach Brent Venables and that Alabama has impressed him. "My dad and I joke about it a lot since he's a coach and my father," Kinne said. "At the same time, he wants me to make my own choice." If that wasn't enough, with Kinne's family making a move to Waco with the new job, the top quarterback is thinking about either staying in Canton or possibly moving to the Dallas area. "Coach Steve Bragg is a great coach at North Mesquite and we have a house up there, so that's an option for me that I'm looking into," Kinne said. "I'm pretty coach friends with coach Todd Dodge, but his son is the quarterback now up there so I don't think that will be happening or anything." Big Dallas DE adding offers New offers have found Plano (Texas) West defensive/offensive lineman Ben Bass. The 6-foot-5, 265-pounder has now added scholarships from Colorado, Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss. Bass though will no doubt wait for some big names like Texas, LSU, Notre Dame, and Texas A&M to show up before making a quick decision as he is wide open with his recruitment thus far. The top player describes himself as both "agile and mobile" but also "hostile." That mean streak will no doubt keep his offer collection full. Passing the eyeball test It wasn't hard to miss the biggest player of the day when the 6-foot-8, offensive lineman Terrael Williams from Dallas (Texas) Skyline weighed in at over 400 pounds. Williams also claims early offers from Kansas State and Oklahoma. Though several of his teammates showed up with him, it was obvious that Williams was the biggest prospect on hand. He also spent some time working out this past summer with Dallas Lincoln star Richetti Jones. "He's a big player man," Jones said. "Don't be confused though, he's not a mean guy. He can play and everything, but he's really a quiet type of kid."
Excuse me? Shawn Bradley would look out of shape at that weight. This kid would have to be 9 feet tall to NOT look out of shape. He might well be a terrific athlete for his size, but that's just unhealthy. I don't suppose we have a chance at this guy, but he sure sounds impressive. Williams should take a page from this guy's health regiment. Being big is one thing, and this guy is big. Williams might well play at a bigtime school and maybe even in the NFL, but some coach is going to mandate that he lose 50 pounds or more just to give him a better chance of staying alive. And if you've seen a picture of Allen, he doesn't look anywhere NEAR 300 pounds. He's lean, if that's possible at this weight. So he's huge AND strong. Which SMU assistant recruits Lancaster? This guy looks sort of like the lineman in "Varsity Blues." He's not exactly beautiful, but if he can play, who cares? Linemen should be ugly! Right, BUS? Go PONIES!
I think big, quick and ugly is better than big, quick and not ugly.
Likewise, if someone is not quite big enough or quick enough, I definitely want him to be ugly enough that he just might make a guy think twice about blowing past him. The scarier the better, as far as I'm concerned! ![]()
Yes! And I have molded myself in your image. Or perhaps you in mine since I have about 20 years on you. But ain't it great that we have women who still think we are cute and manly!!!!! I do not know what that says about them, but I sure am happy for it.
