We were fellow MLBs. I was running 2nd team behind Sherwood when I was injured and had to stop. I was one year behind him. We mainly ran a 5-2. Bruce Portillo was THE man.

Funny, I was able to extrapolate that he was smart kid by his grades. He is in the top 10% of his class and has Ivy League offers. Also has offers from UC Berkeley and Stanford. I didn't feel my brother's assertion was a stretch.

Ivy League offers? I didn't see any in the list ("top academic schools like Stanford, Tulane, Holy Cross and California are interested")

Stanford & Berkeley - Pac-10 (and yes they are great schools)
Tulane - CUSA (another great school)
Holy Cross - Patriot League (and yes, I also think this is a great school)

The only "top academic schools" on there are Stanford and Berkeley. Tulane and Holy Cross are about equal to SMU IMO. Nowhere is an offer mentioned from any of these schools, just interest. I also don't see Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth, Penn, Cornell, or Columbia mentioned anywhere.

That being said, the schools mentioned have tough academic standards and being in the top 10 in the class is quite an achievement (I know because I am top 10 in my class and it's hard work). I wish him luck on his search for the perfect place to maximize his academic and athletic experience and hope his search leads him to the Hilltop.

Ivy League schools do not offer athletic scholarships, so I don't know how somebody can have Ivy League offers.

Now if he has applied for admission to Ivy League schools. and was accepted and offered a scholarship based on his academic and extra-cirricular record, that's different.

I was offered by Yale (Coach Caram Coza or something similar). There were no athletic scholarships but he said there were "jobs" on campus to pay for the education, such as sweeping out an office in the Basketball arena. He stated the cost would be minimal to attend. But the point is it was an offer to play football at Yale if I desired to do so.

Ivy League system is complicated. You are "offered" a waiver to get into the freshman class. Mrydel is also right, the Ivy League schools often get the kids they offer.

I'm sorry Mrydel, I thought he was the kid with the offer from Cornell. I know Holy Cross plays Yale every year.

You are offered a spot on the list of assured acceptance. The coaches get 10-15 in every year that do not meet the academic requirements of the university. Then, they can suggest "10-20" players for admission. A degree from some of the schools would also be worth taking out 30-40k in loans.

So yes, some kids are offered something to play football.
