My original point was, and again this is not a subject for this board, was actually more directled to the "classless" comment. It is a fact that the initial inflow of Africans to the United States was primarily on slave ships. Like it or not that is true. An athlete may or may not be from Africa. One could be U.S. born and bred and have an African name and live within African culture, those names and cultures having "immigrated" to the U.S. on slave ships. I am not proud this is the way that it occured nor do I imagine any of us are, but it is a fact that can have no dispute. The point I was trying to make is that just because an individual has an African name does not mean he is directly from Africa. Nor does it mean he is not. I apologize if anyone mistook my statement for anything other than honest fact.

No worries mrydel, it wouldn't have even been an issue had someone not decided to start judging your comment.

I'd like to redirect this thread back to talking about this recruit. I live in Houston and originally am from here going to highschool in Fort Bend. I plan to make a trip out to see a ball game or two and hopefully I will have some good things to report on his play. Seems like a very exciting prospect for us.

That's interesting. I've never met someone with an African last name who was not born in Africa, or at the very least has a father who was born in Africa. And I've never heard of any African who was brought over on a slave ship who retained his or her African last name.

Oh, and the names you mention are Muslim, by the way, and not African.

Many many Muslims reside on the continent of Africa.

I deal with people every day that have names of African origin. They have no direct tie to Africa other than it is their heritage and culture and their parents for that reason choose to endow them with a name from that heritage and culture. They have never been to Africa, they will probably never go to Africa but they have names that you would equate to Africa. That heritage and culture was brought here under not the best of circumstances.

Now please lets at least agree to disagree and get back to the discussion of recruiting a kid that could help our team.

I don't even think we disagree, mrydel. And I admire the work you do for minorities and protected classes.
