Actually, the "run and shoot" employs more of a drop back (pro style) passer than a scrambler...SMU just happen to have a scambling QB in that system (Flanigan)...Colt had something like 50 yards of rushing all year and many would agree that Hawaii's offense this year was the best they have ever had...Justin may add a couple new wrinkles, but overall the QB steps back and launches the ball...

WTF? The Run & Shoot model does NOT employ a more pro style QB.
I don't know whether you'd call it a "scrambler" either, but it ain't pro style drop back. It's either run out of the shotgun or it's run under center where the QB rolls out but stays between the tackles. A scrambler just makes the D keep their Mike or Will LB or the strong safety spy the QB. Look, if Justin Willis is truly coachable, and I believe that he is given that we have little evidence to the contrary, I think the guy tears it up in this O. The only reasons that JWill might have been run first QB this last year is because his coaching sucked and because his hand still was not 100%. He was stronger than his freshman year...that was clear. Let's just see how he looks in the spring. I think he's fine.

Over the past nine years (not a small sample at all) the average national rank is 106th. Out of 114 to 119 schools.

But you're right, Barry Sanders has a lot to do with this discussion.

Junes Jones will win at SMU. He will bring fans to games. He will bring excitement to the program.

He will not attract top running backs.

Hey, we can't have it all.

All this means is that there are no good Polynesian running backs. If Jones could have recruited the mainland, maybe he would have had a good one.

Cannot really compare JJ Hawaii recruiting with his potential recruiting at SMU in view of the restrictions he was under.

[quote="PerunaPunch"]Unlike many on this forum, I have a high regard for Phil Bennett. If I was to make on critique it would be that I felt that in several cases he 1) didn't modify his schemes to fit his players, and 2) he didn't always put the best 11 on the field.

You are correct on being unlike many on this forum if you thought PB's regime was anything but helpful.

The Gators are pretty confident that Cyrus and teammate Adrian Bushnell will be theirs come signing day.

here's an update on Cyrus Gray from today in the DMN. Also an interesting tidbit on a kid from SOC named Kydarian Wilkens (5-8, 165) who was dropped by Baylor(However, be aware that when a Big 12 team drops a player this late it COULD be because there are major qualification issues-this is just about the time they decommit from Tech and Baylor and end up at TCU and TCU fans claim they stole one). He is small-but sometimes these kids fit at the Inside Receiver spot. He was recruited by Clay Jennings the former BU and Houston Coach rumored on another thread to be a possible assistant at SMU. Before his Baylor commitment there was interest from SMU.

Of course there was a coaching change and his only other offer thru now has been TX State...of course that might have been because he was a solid commitment. Surprising though that Briles would decommit a kid from SOC seeing how it's a fertile recruiting ground unless academics had something to do with it

actually Wilkins played CB at SOC-he is tad small but had at least 7 Ints. No 50 on DMN Area Top 100. 3 star on Scout and 5.4 2 star on Rivals.

That is a stupid statement. BU & Briles both in the past have proven they will sign players they know will not qualify or may feel there are issues yet to be resolved. Same with Tech and both programs have had far more players not qualify than TCU over the last 7 years.

Bottom line is TCU signs players who can graduate and has been honored by the coaches association a lot more than UH, BU, Tech or SMU. Didn't see BU, UH or SMU on the last list of honorees (and probably more than all those programs combined). Did UH under Briles ever get honored?

Remember the Eric Dickerson story? No contact.

Send your thoughts to Randy Ross. He's compiling this stuff and probably working with the information June Jones has.
