E. Tex is an area that coaches holds grudges and to have someone come from OOS and pull ships will long be remembered.
That's baloney.
Why? Have talked to the coaches at both Tyler schools (public) recently and I absolutely guarantee they look after their own and do not appreciate anybody doing anything wrong to them. If JJ wants to kill a pipeline to E. Tex that is fine, but I really doubt he has a clue what he is doing with this situation.
I agree with you HF. Lousy thing to do to the kid. It will probably haunt our recruiting at Tyler Lee for some time to come! Here is the Rivals link:

yeah, I'd hate to ruin that recruiting pipeline that our east Texas native former HC got going.
Can you imagine how life would've been without Tony Eckert?

If what is reported here is true, our athletic department is Top 25 in stupidity. If NO ONE contacted Ralston to let him know that SMU had pulled his scholarship, that is a classless move and I am ashamed. I already thought it was pretty bad to pull it a few weeks before signing day, but you have to at least tell the guy that you are pulling it.
June Jones better watch his step now because who knows how far this will affect relations with other Texas high school coaches.

This is the worst year I've ever seen for this in Texas -with Gundy, Briles and others involved. If it keeps up perhaps the NCAA is going to step in -with an early signing date the possible solution. I keep waiting for some Dad to sue a university so long as there were not academic issues

"As for if and when SMU will ever be able to recruit a Robert E. Lee player? Owens said not while he is head coach.
"I wouldn't dare let them step on this campus and come into my office," Owens said. "I am not going to make my kids jump through hoops so they can wait two weeks before signing day (and change things)."
Tyler Lee is one of the better programs in the State and I guarantee this will go beyond just one school.

If the kid was given quantifiable conditioning goals months ago, and he didn't meet them, then he can only blame himself. Another PR disaster is if a kid has a coronary on the field during 2 a days. At 6 feet 340 lbs. it sounds like that kid was a stroke waiting to happen. We don't know all of the facts, only that the scholarship was pulled for not meeting conditioning goals. I wish him luck and lots of salads, broiled fish and chicken.

a kid should not be offered under those conditions. PERIOD. The only conditions should be academic. Kinda like the guy in Diner who promised to marry the girl but only if she was passed a test on Baltimore Colts History.

I'm guessing the truth is somewhere in between all of this. While I agree that this was a crappt thing to do, but if Dews didn't live up to his end of the bargain, there's nobody to fault but himself. Unfortunately, that's not the information that people are reading in the paper.
Does seem like we lost another potential recruiting pipeline, though.
Not off to quite a stellar start.

It's interesting how Mike Owens continues to control the Tyler media. He's been doing that for years.
The overreaction by some of you on this is ridiculous.
Edit: That is an irresponsible comment by Mike Owens. I understand his frustration because he's battling for his player. The timing of the Jones hire threw a lot of things off.
The reporting is poor. Obviously, no one from SMU can comment on this, but like I said, I've been around enough coaches who will tell exactly what they want you to know.
We'll get through this. In the meantime, Mike Owens better figure out why his team went 5-6 and was quick exit in the playoffs last year.

5-6 and in the playoffs? Even if they were 5-4 in the regular season, that's the real travesty.

They were 3-2 in district and weren't even the last seed to get in the playoffs. (There are only 6 teams in 12-5A.)

Obviously I hate to see it happen to anyone, BUT now that a new man is in charge, he can decide who he wants for his new business. It's life, and it sucks. Obviously June feels like the players he will be getting in exchange are of higher quality. The kids not getting any other real D-1 offers, that should be a telling quote.
That being said, good luck to Dews and I hope he lands on his feet somewhere.
