Great post. Looks like we have a good one. Sounds like he will be a good locker room presence with the attitude he has.

I watched the game and would agree with PonyDoh’s assessment and add that Otis is an unselfish player who appears to have a terrific demeanor.

Now for the not so great stuff. He was 3-12 from the field with all his baskets being lay-ups. Absent those, he was 0-9 from the field. I doubt any of those 9 shots were beyond 5 feet. He had his shot blocked 2 or 3 times and turned the ball over a couple more times under the basket.

Again, this is based only on watching 1 game and I think the positives far outweigh the negatives. He also played almost the entire game.

Yeah, Otis definitely had the ball swatted on him quite a few times, and he shot the ball awfully. I don't really think missing that many lay-ups is indicative of how he'll always shoot at point blank range, but who knows. He made some very polished moves to get a few of the shots, I'll say that.

The clips I'd seen of Otis also made him look Willie Davis explosive. One of which was a quick rise and power flush on the break. After re-watching that video, I'm thinking it was a year or so back, but could be wrong. Simply, Otis looks a lot thicker now then he did in the video, possibly 20 lbs or so. Its possible he's lost some of his lift.

I think he's a really interesting recruit, though. He's just a player w/an odd combination of skills given his body type. Honestly, the way he handles and feeds, he could be a legitimate 3, that's a pretty mean back to the basket type. The downfall there is that he may not have the lateral foot speed to guard opposing 3s on the perimeter. Also, can he shoot a jumper?

If he can't, he's an undersized 4, and I'm not sure how that will translate vs tall shot blocking types. Dominguez was not an overly tall team. Tallest guy was 6-7, and Otis still had problems get clean looks
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Any long term worry about Otis' knees? the article said he's had problems with them as have his dad. I'm sure Doherty did a little due diligence there...

Not sure, but certainly could explain his lack of explosion as compared to the youtube video

He has to improve his FT shooting. 45% for the season? That will kill us.

I'm impressed that he only had three fouls for the year, all in the first game!
