Don't you think en lieu of 2010 ships being used, JJ will just force attrition. It seems pretty clear that it's out w/the old and underachieving, in w/the new

So this is what confuses me. If for instance, someone were to leave from the 2006 class. Can you sign your maximum 25 in 2009, and then a 26th designated as a replacement for the 2006 class as long as you stay under the 85?

Attrition still won't change the fact that you can only award 25 per year. All 25 were used in 2008, so if we go over 25 then the recruits over 25 would have to be greyshirts counted on 2010. Mrydel you can't go back to substitute for 2006 attrition. Once they enroll in August (or January for Greyshirts) they count.

Looking for 5 or 6 players to make the choice to focus on their education and graduate.
1 or 2 may want to go play at a lower level.

It concerns me a bit that we used 25 scholarships for 2008 and most certainly will use 25 for 2009. Throw in some grayshirts and we will have circa 55 slots tied up leaving only 30 rides left for 2010 and 2011. If the team can achieve some modest success by the end of next year and JJ has solidified his recruiting efforts, we will be fairly light on rides commencing with the years when our chances to recruit the truly high quaility kids start to materialize. I guess you take everything you can get, hope to build depth/talent right now, role the dice and let attrition make up for the additional numbers needed in 10 & 11.

Numbers simply don't add up unless there is a planned purging of upper classes.

I'd think that has to be the case

I've got us at (give or take a couple whose status I am unsure of) 93 scholarships for next year right now-including kids who will be 5th year Seniors and you might not get their redshirts back. Plenty of offers still going out. Will have to be down to 85 by next August.

You bring up an important point when you talk about redshirts. When you throw those numbers into the equasion the numbers really do not add up. Should be interesting how JJ gets back down to 85 and how he views redshirting in the future. Seems like a number of offers are still on the board and I have not read anything which addressed withdrawls.

JJ likes to gray-shirt 2-4 players.

Thank you.
It is going to be tough to make the numbers work. Some offers to committments may be withdrawn before it is all over. But I will say this, I have never heard a school say they missed out on a player they wanted more than any other player due to having reached their scholarship limit. If the top one wanted commits late than I guess the lowest one on the list gets left out. Not pretty but this is our last chance to make it and it better be done with the best available.

this has always confused me. since a scholarship is for the most part "year to year," couldnt you get rid of the fat during two-a-days and sign "walk-ons"... if I remember correctly JJ awarded a number of scholarships during two-a-days
