Re: colin lagasseIf there's one position that JJ's crew can recruit, it's slot receiver. He's going to be way down the pecking order. As Stallion said in another thread about Dieter, if he's starting from day 1, it would be proof of some pretty bad recruiting from the few years before. Same applies for Colin. I think he'll get his chance, but he should redshirt this year. Darius Johnson and Jeremy Johnson will start in 2012.

Re: colin lagasseOr, if he (or any other freshman) starts, it could be viewed as proof of some really good recruiting this year. Coaches will miss on some, but they'll also hit on some unexpected studs. If Lagasse plays this year, kudos to the coaches for finding a gem.

colin lagasse
really it will be some sort of combination of both.
Re: colin lagasse
Aren't you the one that said it would be ideal if Richardson reshirted because we had an army of wr's.
It could also be viewed as not so good recruiting as June has 4 years of his wr's that he recruited on team (an army as you put it). Also, Daijaun Stewart is about the same size as Lagasse but faster. Why aren't you touting him? "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

colin lagasseSeems like pony up and goldenstang have it right. If a freshman starts, at SMU or any program, it is due to some mix of poor recruiting in the past and good recruiting in the most recent year. If SMU had a 5 star freshman rb coming in who started over Line because he was straight up better, that would be good recruiting in the recent year. If SMU has to start a true freshman on the offensive line, that would likely be closer to poor recruiting in the past.

Re: colin lagasseCole Beasley and Wes Welker(Texas Tech) are both WRs with 4.3 to 4.4 speed. Lagasse should be a good player here, but he does not have the other two guys speed.

Re: colin lagasse
Yes. You're right -- that was me. The only difference is I have seen a little video of Lagasse and liked what I saw. Richardson might turn out to be Charles Woodson, in which case he should be playing right away, too. I'd like to see all freshmen redshirt, whenever possible, and to be fair, I have no idea if either of these should play right away. I just like the little I have seen of Lagasse.
Again, the only reason I'm not touting him is because I have never seen him play. I saw Lagasse on TV and was very impressed. If Stewart is better, he should play earlier. Lagasse just seemed to have that "it" factor. I'm not sure what "it" is, but he has the ball a lot and made a lot of plays when he got it. Play them both, if they deserve it. I wasn't trying to put down Stewart or any other player. I just like the bits I have seen of Lagasse. Proud to be a PonyFan
Re: colin lagasseI like to see every incoming FR get a RS year both to allow them to physically mature and to adjust to life at college...but the bottom line is that any coach is going to play the guys he thinks can help him win the most games
should have some healthy competition at plenty of positions this year
Re: colin lagasse
When has Beasley ever been timed in the 4.3 to 4.4 range? They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither liberty or security

Re: colin lagasse
Per nfldraftscout.com, Welker ran a 4.61, 4.64 and a 4.68 for nfl scouts. Same website had Cole Beasley's range from 4.49 to 4.51. Welker's game has little to do with "vertical" speed. He's an incredible athlete, great hands, explosive, great lateral quickness but fast aint his gig.
Re: colin lagassethere is 40 speed which is straightaway and then football position specific speed which includes quickness out of the breaks or for a db hip and backpedal quickness. Straight on spped is nice but more important for a slot is the quickness part and welker and beasley arent close to 4.4 much less 4.3. Outside guys are more the straight on speedsters who can stretch the field opening up the underneath routes for the slots. anybody remember UT bragging about the sprinter speed of Jordan Shipley.....and then at the NFL combine runs in the high 4.6's but yet he seemed to get open and behind people while E Sanders was in the 4.3's as I recall.
Re: colin lagasseBeasley was plenty fast in our offense. If Lagasse is anything like him, he'll be just fine, too.
