Of course. SMU should give Matthew a scholarship. Kid has a leg on him. However, Rivals is the service the majority will go with as far as rankings go.

We have a kicker on campus that got 78 letters from LSU already.

the type of kid Matthew is, he would be fine coming in and learning from the other kickers that are there, but competing hard respectfully for the starting spot even if that didn't come until his sophomore or junior year. Also knowing him, he would work hard and earn that spot sooner than later.

please see the below link to an article on Matthew recently from the Abilene paper and comments about Matthew from his Coach, Bob Shipley. Coach Shipley knows a little bit about what it takes in college to compete and he raised great sons and role models for Matthew.

Back in the day when I was a walk on at SMU, I met and became friends with a kicker on the team.
Short version.
His son kicked locally for a 4 A school and got all the letters from LSU. He also had three offers to turn pro in another sport.
Voice mails and emails to two addresses have been sent - MANY times................. to coach.
Cricket sound.

thank you for the explanation. To his credit, Coach Jones did actually email Matthew direct once.
Matthew is getting more attention from other larger programs, such as Alabama, K-State, and Baylor.
So far, they all want him to walk on and are waiting until end before they see if a scholarship opens up.
SMU has a chance to get a solid kicker/athlete and great kid with an offer.

Matthew was at Baylor-K-state game as a Baylor recruit and that night was amazing!
Matthew heads to K-State - Texas game as a K-State recruit in a few weeks.

He is seeing if there is even a slight chance SMU may have a scholarship open up and if so, plans to come to SMU-Tulsa game Saturday.

once again, thank you for your explanation.

does posting his info on fan message boards help him get noticed by coaching staff (serious question)? Any luck contacting any of the other guys on the staff besides Jones? I don't really know how this all works, but it sounds like he could be a real asset for the mustangs. good luck.

Sending his info to the coaching staff helps him get noticed by the coaching staff.

Correct, direct to coaches is the best way. Coaches have his info to my knowledge and Coach Stigall and Coach Ross have been very helpful and interested per reports. It is that apparently, other powers that be, believe that SMU can continue to have kickers/punters walk on and respond to classified ads as the way to get solid kickers/punters, therefore they are wanting him to walk on.

Discussion on message boards help to recognize the perceived needs of a program and stimulate interest amongst supporters of a program. Alumni and supporters voices can be VERY powerful at times.
In this case, I believe SMU needs to sign a kicker/punter even if only to develop under Hover if he improves.
If not, then that kicker can earn the spot. Whether it is Matthew McCrane or someone else, I believe SMU needs this position on scholarship.
I heard Matthew was contacted last night by Coach Sean Snyder last night to attend game day this weekend against Texas.
What is interesting is that K-State's kicker is VERY solid but they are still recruiting for that position, even as a scholarship position possibly. It is difficult to understand why some at SMU believe that solid Special team players are easy to get.

I would go to this page and email Coach Gansz (again, since I assume you already have), Coach Phillips, Randy Ross and Steve Stigall. The last two are not coaches, but they help a lot with recruiting from an organizational standpoint. Can't hurt to get in front of as many eyes as possible.
