Okay, what does Southern Miss have going for them that no one else does? Someone please enlighten me.

Fedora learned to recruit under Zook. He learned offense at Middle Tennessee along side Leach, I think.

Before we hired Jones, Fedora was always a guy I thought SMU should consider.

USM was the 50th ranked team before they added the extra 4 star and 5 star recruits. Once rivals calculates those additions they may get mast Miss St and Mississippi and go into the top 30. I don't see where Brown was having qualifying issues. This is the type of class I hope SMU has next year. It will be interesting to see how USM does in the upcoming football season.

He's definitely is a qualification risk-so are plenty of others on Southern Miss's list. The advantage? If he is a non-qualifier(amanded) he can still enroll at Southern Miss and receive financial assistance as outlined in a post below. This is how Louisiana Tech gets some decent talent from some quality Louisiana prospects.

This explains how the game is played:

LSU has competition for WR Deandre Brown. As previously reported, Brown is an LSU lock... and that hasn't change, as long as he qualifies. Brown has issues with eligibility which usually would mean he is prep school-bound (similar to WR
Deangelo Benton). However, Brown is not going to be ineligible. Based on his scores, he will be a partial qualifier. LSU and the SEC does not accept partial qualifiers, which would mean Brown would need to gray-shirt (pay out-of-pocket for his Fall semester) or go to a prep school (likely Hargrave Military Academy). Sun Belt and CUSA team do accept partial qualifiers. Unfortunately for LSU, another player has arisen. USM (University of Southern Mississippi) in Brown's home state does take partial qualifiers on full scholarship. Also, the coach (Tony Hughes) that was recruiting Brown heavy at Ole Miss (and succeeding) was recently hired on at USM. Brow is still LSU-bound, if he qualifies... but if he doesn't, we will have an interesting sub-plot.

BTW I do think there is a mistake in that synopsis. Unless the Rule was changed in the last year-the difference is that at Southern Miss he will only have to pay in-state tuition while at LSU he would pay regular full tuition. Professor X-has this rule been modified?

I may be being dense here, but I thought there was no such thing under the NCAA rules as a partial qualifier on full scholarship, which is another question that I have about your prior post.

This should clarify. jtstang . Yes I think you either are a qualifier or non-qualifier now. I was using old terminology. It appears non-qualifiers "may be considered for financial aid so long as the it is non-athletics institutional aid that is not from an athletics source and is based on financial need only, consistent with institutional and conference regulations". These rules change so often-and then the changed rule gets rescinded by the President's council that it is hard to follow

I'm surprised nobody has pointed out that our 6-6 receiver 2 star recruit reportedly has been timed at 4.52 and USM's 5 Star receiver recruit reportedly runs a 4.62. Our 6-6 Receiver recruit reports a 4.25 shuttle while the 5 star reports a 4.37 shuttle. Our 6-6 receiver reports a 33 inch vertical while the 5 star reports a 28.1 vertical. Now Brown did his testing at a more recognized and regulated event for Nike but if those test numbers for Drewery are correct then SMU really found an interesting sleeper in Drewery. In fact, Drewery had more catches, receiving yards and more tackles on defense than the 5 star. I really don't have a real good picture yet concerning the level of play at Eastern Shores Christian though.

Atlantic Shores Christian appeared to play a mixed schedule this past year. They played some very good programs like Liberty Christian (essentially the Liberty University Prep Team) which beat them 41-7 and Hargrave who beat them by two touchdowns. And they played Riverdale Baptist of Upper Marlboro, MD, long one of the better private school football programs in the DC area, relatively close. They barely beat a very bad program Potomac School of McLean which is in its infancy in football. The rest of their schedule was probably tier 2-3 private schools in Virginia and they were 2-8. My guess is that this guy was a great player against relatively weak competition. To give you some perspective, Virginia has Public schools which by law cannot play private schools, and then the Military schools and Liberty which are generally tier 1 preps since they have a bunch of college players parked there. Then there are the prep schools that do not have post-graduate programs to speak of, nor do they recruit very much, but have been around a long time and have established programs and play in competitive conferences. These are schools like St. Christophers, O'Connell, Ireton, Woodbury Forest, St. Stephens-St. Agnes, and Episcopal High Schools. Then there are schools which are new and have newer programs and might take a post grad or two, but are not yet competitive. These include many of the schools that Atlantic Shores played last year. That said, he has size and if his speed is as advertised, he could be a very good receiver for us.
