None of our recruits except for 1 are getting any other Division 1A offers.

That's probably because other schools figure they can'y compete with us and don't want to waste the time once it has become known that we are in the mix, right?

you could just sense that Phil Bennett was reaching in desperation with this class even before the Season caved in. Most of our early commits are the kind of guys you bring in on February 2 on the last weekend before signing date

The attachment on my post (1st page of this topic) discusses how Petrino pulls an offer from the #1 rated player in San Antonio recently.

This was not the surprise that it is reported to be.
Each committed recruit was personally told when Bennett left that we were as obligated to them as they were to us...meaning both sides were free to change their minds. (After all, two have already gone in different directions on their own volition.)
All the commitments were on notice that the new staff would make an independent evaluation upon its arrival.
And that's exactly what happened.
Again, no surprise.

This coach has an ego that is totally out of control. He should worry about other things. Like not having a losing season.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Clearly, SMU notified all recruits and their coaches that there was a probability that their offer could be reascended.
When you are conducting business in Texas, plain straight-forward English is understood.
If Coach Owens was conducting business like we do in Texas, Coach Owens would know that as the coach it was his responsibility to make sure his player clearly understood that SMU may or may not give him an offer. Coach Owens should have worked with Drews on a back-up plan.
Bottom line, Coach Owens was sleeping and he let his player down; so, he blames it on SMU to save face.
Coach Owens shouldn't let his lack of leadership hinder other children from the opportunity of attending SMU.

Bingo! We have just learned that recruiting is a two-way street especially when it comes to a new coaching staff coming in. And HFvictory flat out knows that.

Obviously they did not.
FWIW I understand these things happen, but Jones doesn't know the territory yet and while most HS coaches would probably understand the situation, this particular coach is one you don't mess around with. Unfortunately if this was handled a little better, a warning shot, a phone call, etc would have made this a non-issue. As it stands SMU will lose a lot out of this.

HFvictory wrote:"As for if and when SMU will ever be able to recruit a Robert E. Lee player? Owens said not while he is head coach.
"I wouldn't dare let them step on this campus and come into my office," Owens said. "I am not going to make my kids jump through hoops so they can wait two weeks before signing day (and change things)."
Tyler Lee is one of the better programs in the State and I guarantee this will go beyond just one school.
Careful, your purple is getting all over your computer.

well I think it sucks-and I've been consistent for years whether it is TCU Basketball, A&M Basketball, Mike (I'm a MAN!!!) Gundy or Briles at Baylor or Petrino at Arkansas. So I think I'll just continue to think it sucks and not blow in the wind like some SMU fans depending on whose doing the sucking.

June Jones is a particular coach you don't mess around with. I think he just sent that message. And I like it.
