Update on top 100 b-ball recruit Aaron DotsonModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Bobbi on the dmn recruiting blog has an update but I can't access it right now for some reason. Here's what the link summary says
SMU: Basketball recruits soak in all they can in visit1 hour ago by Bobbi Roquemore Russell, a 6-4 shooting guard from Seattle Rainer Beach, knew little about SMU at first, but speaking to Dallas Mavericks guard and Seattle native Jason Terry increased his interest. He would like to pursue a career in real estate and ...
Getting either one of these guys would be HUGE.....getting both could be program changing. I think we are a solid SG away from being very good team. From what I've been told, Russell is a 4-star quality guard, and Dotson is rated as such. Hopefully JET will help get Dotson to Dallas....I like his comments about SMU and Doherty in the DMN....sounds promising.
I would agree that based on some of the comments I've read and offers he has Russell appears to be pretty darn close to a 4 Star Recruit. Several sites have mentioned that he was underrated as a 3 Star. Both big time recruits from what I can discern.
Rivals says he has eight offers...and lists Duke, OU, UCLA, Tech and Iowa.....have all of those schools offered?
I had a chance to talk with Aaron and Nick on the boulevard yesterday about life, basketball and such. I tried to sell them on the positives of coming to SMU not only as a basketball player but as a student here. Talking to them, they seemed genuinely interested in SMU, but I think it will be hard to lure them away from the other big name schools that have previously been mentioned. Nick has been to official visits at K-State, Iowa, Duke and here, while Aaron has been to LSU, here, and will be going to Louisville. If we could get one of these guys, it would be a huge boost. Here's to hoping we can snag one if not both of them.
I would not count out Doh.
McCoy had offers from Kentucky and Virginia, Dia had offers from Louisville and Oklahoma. Nothing I have read has said that UCLA or Duke has offered either Dotson or Russell. We are so close to being good...I just wish that half the people that attended the Tulsa game last Saturday would attend the Tulsa game at Moody. And for the record, I would rather spend 4 of the most important years of my life in Dallas than Manhattan or Iowa City.
That is close to what Coach Reinebold said.
"You want to go to school in Ames(substitute Iowa City), Iowa or play in a great city like Dallas?" "There is only one Manhattan and it isn't in Kansas!" "We will play man to man and we will pick you up at the airport." - Larry Brown

Russell doesn't have half the offers he often gets listed as having. There is literally zero interest from Duke and he'll be waiting forever for that UCLA offer. Ultimately, he's going to have to pick between SMU, and a bunch of Big 12 schools in less than desirable towns “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Ponydoh, I have always been curious about the schools that are listed under a recuits name on Rivals and wondered if it is schools that are interested in him or schools that he is interested in. Where do you find out exactly who has actually offered a recruit? You seem certain he hasn't been offered by Duke or UCLA.
When will I start feeling stimulated??
Its guesswork. The best way to tell if there is legitimate interest in a player is if he actually is invited for an official paid visit. Its a moving target too-a kid may have an offer one day and not the next since they fill up say the one availiable scholarship at the recruits position. Some offers reported by recruits are really offers to visit. Don't expect a kid to ever mention withdrawn or stale offers. To be considered a true offer the kid should be referring to written offers only but in fact that often not the case.
This is exactly right. Duke signed Elliot Williams in 08, whom they hope can be a PG. In 2010, they have verbals from Tyler Thornton, a PG from DC, and Andre Dawkins a 2G from Va Beach. In the next few weeks, they'll find out if they get Kenny Boynton, a PG-ish prospect from Florida. Simply, if they had interest in Russell, it was very topical. UCLA is much the same way. No offense to Russell, but he got a few letters, a few calls, maybe a visit, and is enamored by the possibility. That said, if he has capable handlers, they'll realize he's nowhere near a priority and will be recruited over before he even signs his LOI. IF these schools strike out in every conceivable way, hee may get an offer, but to say he can just accept , at any time, isn't true. “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Just checked his list and it looks like we are in his final 6: Louisville, LSU, SMU, USC, Wake and Washington. Not bad company....hopefully Doherty can pull this one off.
