Just maybe he can come up and help stop the run.

Not sure if "reach" is the right word. Really more of a best athlete on the team that relied on him to be everywhere on the field. Jack of all trades, master of none. Not his fault, team couldn't afford to develop him in one area. If this kid is making all state teams as a multiple position player, imagine him finding his roll and studying it full time. I can see why the coaches are excited: coaches son, great athlete, smart, film room rat, etc. These are the guys you want on your team.

I don't know why, but this story sounds eerily similar to Zac Line's. Mid-west kid from out of thin air who plays multiple positions and is the team's star. I think we can all agree Zac has turned out to be a nice piece to our SMU puzzle. We should be able to put him back at his natural position of linebacker next year with the RB class coming in. If you disagree on Zac playing well, take a look back at a few games and see how many times he made huge blocks to keep Padron or Bo Levi on their feet. Remember, he was a true freshman.

These guys are football players plain and simple. Bring me a couple of these guys and year and they will instill work ethic and leadership.

Although it is very important for the bulk of your class, recruiting isn't always about stars, accolades, and offers. I trust JJ's eye for talent.

I do not think Zac Line will ever play linebacker at SMU. The impression I have is JJ likes one big strong general purpose back that can run a bit, catch a pass and as you noted block very well. Zac can do all these.

As far as the coaches son thing goes that does make you a good D1 player. Cody Hawkins is a coaches son and he is on the bench at Colorado. Of all of the reports no mention of his speed. Again not that it is good or bad just no mention.

A kid that big with a 350 bench and 36" vertical HAS to get offers from big schools.

You don't see those stats from SEC commits.

Something is amiss.

You really think JJ would offer a SS this late in the process that is "slow". Give me a break! This kid is a 2 star and I believe this rating came before his offers from Louisville and us. I think based on what I have heard that the coaching staff is very happy to have his committment.

He does not have an offer from Iowa State. Only SMU for sure as the Louisville offer might be off the table. Whatever the case at worst he could helps special teams (which is an area that we need help). Welcome to the Hilltop.

Iowa State is not what I consider a "big school".

Maybe they will use him at linebacker. Again, it is Iowa high school football that is heavy on the run.

Not saying he can't play and he's not a great kid and will help SMU, but you need quickness and speed at safety and there are no numbers on his 40 or shuttle anywhere that I have seen.

Hopefully he can be a great linebacker for us.

He was not a late offer...in fact I think he was offered very early. Regardless, im sure the kid can play if JJ offered him no matter when his offer came. Interesting to see if he ends up as a strong safety or an outside linebacker.

This was not a kid or family that shopped his services, and so didn't work the schools for offers from anyone and everyone. He talked to just a few schools and committed early and just didn't bother to talk alot about recruiting, even to scouting services as we have seen. So maybe if he worked it he could have had mutiple offers, but he didn't need to nor wanted to, they were very private. He is an athlete with multiple areas we can use him.....thanks for coming.

You just have to trust the coaches. At this point, they aren't going to make offers just to make offers. The kid may not be the second coming, but the coaches are pleased with this commit...so let's be happy. :D
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

He averaged 10 yards per carry rushing and returned an Int for a TD. That should point to some speed.

Also, he is rated 5.3, a high 2*. That is just a shade below some of our 5.4 3*s.

I'm happy.
