I do not understand the DMN rating of area QB's.

Rivals.com midlands Top 25 QB section has Rickey Joe Meeks #7 and Phillips #14.

Watched him in warmups. He has a really strong, accurate arm, to go with those wheels.

Someone told me Phillips is a lefty. Is that true?
Some defenses have trouble defending southpaws, although I'm not sure why.

Yes he is a southpaw....drives me crazy to see someone throw left handed....just looks weird to a right handed person. Image
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

The most impressive thing, to me, is his accuracy. In warmups and during the game, he hit his receivers in the hands, almost every time. And that included when he was throwing on the run. (Of course, they didn't catch every one, but we're not recruiting his receivers.)
He looked really good, to me. I wish they'd called more plays for him.

This was for the district championship, with the winner getting a bye week. I am sure that he wanted to air it out all over the place but it just goes to show how coachable, talented and special he is. It would have been so easy to have taken off, scramble, improvise, and toss the ball down field in order to make a play. He showed class by going with the called plays, allowing the RB to make the breaks rather that him making a statement about himself and his ability. He has done so in the past but has shown valuable lessons learnt.
He had a good but not above parr type of game.

Chris Phillips ranked in the DMN on area QB's with the best keep away stats.

Number 1 is Bill Foran with Chris rated at #7
"Chris Phillips Bishop Lynch 103-188 comp/Att, 1,691yrds, 15TD, 4Int, 3.8TD/Int"

His passing yards could have been greater but as Mustang Stomping says he plays to win regardless of his own stats.
Among Private schools he is in the top 15 for TD scored, Rushed for 833yrds during the season. Like most good QBs if they had good receivers who know what his stats would have been !

CNNSI.com listed a link on its college football home page about Phillips, titled "Ponies land a plum".

But they seem to think we've overblown his size - they have him listed at 6-2, 217, running a 4.63 in the 40 and with a vertical leap of 29.3".

Either way, it's nice to see a Pony commitment getting some national exposure. Hope he turns out to be everything we hope he is.

Here's the rest of that story.

Ponies Pick Up a Plum

SMU made a huge step up with the pledge of Dallas Bishop Lynch quarterback Chris Phillips.

"I've cancelled my visit to Wyoming for this weekend," Phillips told HR on Thursday. "The only visit I plan on taking is SMU and the date is not set yet, but may be in January."

"That may be the only trip Phillips may be taking, but it's not because others haven't tried.

"In addition to SMU and Wyoming, I have offers from Iowa State, Arkansas, LA Tech, Central Michigan and UTEP," he said.

HR told Phillips of one head coach's comment about Phillips also possessing the athletic ability to play more than just quarterback.

"All the schools have basically recruited me as a quarterback," the six-foot-four, 220-lb Phillips said. "Arkansas have recruited me as a quarterback/athlete."

Phillips has posted a 4.6 in the forty in addition to having a 285 lb bench, 450 lb squat and 32-inch vertical leap. For the regular season, he completed 103-of-188 passes for 1,691 yards with 15 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Phillips is equally impressive in the classroom, carrying a 2.9 GPA and scoring an 18 on the ACT, which he retook in October.

For now, Phillips is only looking to the playoffs next week.

"We have a bye this week," he said. "But we'll be playing either (Sa Antonio) Antonian or (San Antonio) Holy Cross next week."

Phillips is being recruited by SMU assistant Clarence James.

More on Chris Phillips by DMN, they may not have ranked him but they do know about him.
He is putting up fair stats but is leading his team through the play offs.

Chris Phillips didn't have the legs to play running back in middle school.

It wasn't that they were too slow. They just became too long.

Phillips, Bishop Lynch's senior quarterback, hit a growth spurt his seventh-grade year that pushed him from 5-10 to 6-1. Phillips said that made him too tall to take handoffs and created the opportunity Phillips had longed for.

"I always wanted to play quarterback," said Phillips, who had been a running back since the fifth grade. "I looked up to quarterbacks like Warren Moon and Brett Favre, and when I got to seventh grade [at Thomas C. Marsh Middle School], that's when I got my chance."

Bishop Lynch is happy he did.

Phillips, who is now 6-4, 215 pounds, has blossomed at quarterback, becoming a dual threat. The second-year starter has passed for 1,828 yards and rushed for 999 this season, while accounting for 34 touchdowns.

He has Bishop Lynch (11-1) sitting in the TAPPS 5A state semifinals, where it will play Houston St. Pius X (9-2) at 7 p.m. Saturday in Groesbeck, Texas. Bishop Lynch beat Houston St. Pius X, 58-6, earlier this year.

"Our game plan revolves around Chris," coach Gary Oliver said. "He absolutely is the key."

Oliver said Phillips might be the most talented quarterback he has coached, and that includes standouts Matt Nordgren, who is at Texas, and Robert Williams, who went on to play tight end at Miami.

Phillips boasts 4.6-second 40-yard-dash speed and an accurate arm that can sling the ball downfield. But Phillips nearly threw his dreams away as quickly as he can throw a 10-yard out.

Phillips had disciplinary problems his eighth-grade year and missed the football season. But Phillips said he learned his lesson, and he was going to make sure his football career was just beginning.

"I always had goals of making it to the college level and the pros, and I just wanted to stay on the filed and play the sport I loved," Phillips said. "So if I wanted to play football, I was going to have to stay out of trouble."

Phillips became the quarterback of the freshman team his ninth-grade year at Spruce. Phillips, however, chose to transfer to Bishop Lynch the following year, where he sat behind Nordgren before earning the starter's role his junior season.

Now, Phillips will look to lead Bishop Lynch to its first state title since 1997, but his career won't end with Bishop Lynch's season.

Phillips has orally committed to play at SMU, where he's hoping to battle for the starting quarterback spot next season and guide SMU back to national prominence.

"I want to be a part of something special," Phillips said. "And helping SMU turn its program around will be something really special and really big."
