I think it's pretty lame. I find it hard to believe that keeping Dews was going to be a significant burden to the program.

The part that really irks me is that we didn't tell this guy that his scholarship had been rescinded (not reascended). He finally called the school after not hearing from June in the week after he was hired. I understand if June didn't think he'd fit the system or whatever other reason he had, but you have to own up and be a man and call the guy and not leave him hanging in the wind. It's just common courtesy.

Every single one of you would be outraged if something like this happened to you or one of your loved ones. Every single one of you would be calling the coach a classless SOB if it was some other school that did this.

First off, all the recruits were warned that the new coach may or may not honor our offer. He knew that he might not have a spot. He chose to stay, and this is what happened.

Also, I really don't care if it is classless. I am sick of losing. Would you rather have the "classy behavior" of Bennett with a class full of spares like this tubby guy, or do you want a class full of winners, recruited by a winner like June Jones?

I hope we come out and run up the score every game next season if that's what we need to do to get recruits.

What Sun Tzu quote is it xTc always quotes? "Winning is reserved for those who are willing to pay the price".

If the price is a little class to get some winning, I'm all for it.

This whole discussion takes me back to a month or so ago when the same people on this site were saying the same thing about our coaching search. "I cant believe they wont hire Bowden he wants the job", "Slick Rick has said many times he wants to come to SMU", "Franchione is in Trust Me". All these quotes boil down to one thing, that nobody on here knows SH@T. You guys have no clue what happened, what the stipulations were for his scholarship offer, if JJ contacted him or not after he was hired, yall dont know anything. You all are going from what a 17 year old kid said and a hot head Coach. And the last time I checked JJ was the coach and he can and will do whatever he wants. We all wanted him in here to change the face of SMU football and now the same people are complaining about him doing it.

It does suck. Dews deserved to be told as quickly as possible.
However, we are only hearing Owens' point of view b/c SMU can't comment. I too understand that Dews was required to submit to a physical (Scoops alluded to this on page 1 of the thread...and he never, ever misses on stuff like this....).

All of the athletes knew it was a possibility. If they didn't, their coach should have. I agree, FWIW, that Owens pooted this one, and he's hanging it on SMU. As for recruiting there, I have a feeling that Andy Bergfeld, president of the schoolboard for TISD and an alum from the 1st post-DP team might have a word on this subject. Who knows? He might even go to bat for Dews. Or he might not. Regardless, I'm not worried about recruiting Tyler or East Texas in general. Owens just doesn't have that much gravitas. If Danny Long (former McKown coach from Jacksonville), who is/was AD in TISD, doesn't hold a grudge, then I am pretty sure Owens isn't going to have a choice in the matter. He should defend his kid. Absolutely. But it's all talk.

That's the old loser way of thinking rearing its ugly head. Championship programs don't sign players just because it's not too big of a burden to give a unqualified player a scholarship. All schools pull scholarships. It's a harsh and unfair fact. I was actually happy when I saw this. It lets me know someone is actually evaluating talent around here for a change and not just filling a scholarship quota.

I wonder how different the view would be on this board if at the bottom of the article it said we pulled Dews scholarship because Cryus Gray decided he wanted to come here and there were no more scholarships left.

well, hopefully it means the new staff has targeted a big DT who will have an immediate impact

He was told he had an offer IF he lost a certain number of pounds. Not sure what the number is, but if he is still reporting 340 pounds, he hasn't lost much, if any.

He was recruited as a DT, not OL.

Sure hope this means that JJ has 8 others coming in at 310 to play DT and they are quick and have passed the SAT.

340, I used to weight 340 and then I got my hip replaced.

Sure, it would have been nice if Coach Jones called this kid, but he's been a little busy lately, interviewing for his staff, watching tape, etc.
Sorry it worked out this way, but it's part of the business. Players can back out of a commitment and nobody says "poor Bob Stoops," etc.
Good luck, big guy.

I'm more concerned about the health of the kid. 6-0 and 340 is too much for that 18-year-old body frame to hold and could lead to potential heart, cholesterol or circulatory issues. I SAID COULD.

I wonder is Mike Owens is concerned about his health.

Coach switch means everyone is a jump ball. I dont think it was a problem for Stiles and I dont think it is a problem for us. All our recruits knew it - a couple were just hoping it would not happen. Its a shame but not that huge a deal in the big picture. Next issue.

I'm sick of losing too! I feel for Ralston, but I understand that Jones wants to bring in his own guys. With that being said, (if Owens is telling the truth) we should have contacted Ralston first. He shouldn't be forced to call the school because no one from the athletic department has talked to him since Jones was hired. That's bush league and personally, I'm embarrassed if the school acted that way.
