New Commitment/Other Breaking NewsModerators: PonyPride, SmooPower Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking NewsThat's right. But that's why I use the adjective "early." We have NOTHING to whine about with the plan this staff has put in place based on the interest and commits we've received. At least being positive about things before a problem is known to be a problem doesn't negatively impact recruiting.
Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking News2 things working against the concept of recruiting elite players in TX right now:
1.) JJ is an unconventional coach that may not feel the need to do things any way but his own. He may feel that he wants players that fit the system over players that may be ranked higher now. From everything I've read, our staff puts zero pressure on kids to commit right away, instead opting for kids that genuinely want to be at smu and be part of this family. 2.) I will keep on saying it...win first, top level recruits will take notice in our home state. Until then, we will ALWAYS be ranked behind UT, TAMU, TT, TCU, etc. I do undertsand the concern about 1.)lack of offers going out in our own backyard and 2.)perception that Klemm is doing the heavy lifting while some on the staff do not recruit. As I can't speak intelligently on those subjects b/c i don't have all the info, i will defer to those that do (what a concept!!)
New Commitment/Other Breaking News
When I first met JJ at a Cox Alumni Board meeting, he talked about brain-typing, a concept developed by one of his good friend's, Jonathan Niednagel. I know this is old hat for you all at this point, but for those that don't know, it is a neurological approach to evaluating talent through leadership. Niednagel has been hired by several coaches and GM's to evaluate who they should hire as their next coach, select in the draft, etc. Most famously, Niednagel was hired by the San Diego Chargers in 1998 to consult on who they should take with the first pick in the draft. Niednagel accurately predicted the greatness of Manning and the demise of Leaf, was fired by the Chargers, has risen in notoriety since, and remained friends with JJ throughout (one of his biggest supporters in SD). June eats this philosophy up and openly talks about how he applies it to his recruiting philosophy. Yes, I would like to see more from the assistant coaches, but JJ knows how to pick 'em. If you question this, I would encourage you to read up on Niednagel. My understanding is, at one point, Sewell was trying to bring him into the psychology school, but I have not heard any progress on this in a couple years. Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking Newsthanks for that info...pretty cool
New Commitment/Other Breaking News
Interesting read. Thanks for posting. That was more detail than I had seen on it than before. It is a lot more exciting to hear JJ talk about it. He is clearly passionate about the philosophy and you can really feed off of his excitement when he goes into it. "This is . . . dedication to distraction by fans. Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking NewsSo our Guru follows a Theory entitled:

Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking NewsCrazy and damned successful.
Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking NewsWell he's getting his [deleted] kicked by TCU again for the 5th straight year in recruiting-maybe June ought to read Patterson's theory. Or maybe Franchione should be consulted on how to out recruit BCS schools for Top Texas recruits in Year 1 rather than in Year 5. Wonder why no Texas Top 100 players seem to fit into this genuis recruiting theory. You guys can make all the excuses you want. SMU was tardy to the party in Texas this year and they are playing catch up now. No Texas Coaching Staff has ignored Texas during the early signing period like SMU did this year.

Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking News![]() Coach Jones doesn't seek my advice on recruiting! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
New Commitment/Other Breaking News
Don't know where you're getting that from what I said. I supported the thought that he has a record of selecting stronger players than they were ranked in May and referenced a widely accepted philosophy that has been used in the NBA and NFL for over 2 decades, but you clearly know more than them and deserve to belittle them based on the title of one paper they wrote because you subscribe to the pay sites. Also, I said that I would like to see more from the assistant coaches. This was a direct reference to Texas; although, I agree that I did not clearly spell that out. You are crossing points and stretching to connect unrelated dots. You must be a lawyer. Clearly, you missed EXPONY18's Official Rapture Thread. It came and went. We all survived. Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking NewsBecause I ran the numbers. See this thread updated once a month:
viewtopic.php?f=2&t=52422 when you trail Rice in offers and are offering 30-40-50 less recruits than all of Texas schools plus only a handful of the Top Recruits you are officially Tardy to The Party "With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris

Re: New Commitment/Other Breaking NewsQuery: How the heck is SMU making psychological studies and profiles of potential recruits when many, many recruits are being offered blind, or on the first meeting or even based on film. Do you guys even follow what is being reported? I doubt it.

Again, I agree with that point. I'm not arguing with that at all. In fact, I supported it twice in my last two posts. All I said was that I agreed with a comment that JJ had evaluated talent in a couple guys that were not ranked or looked at in a previous May that panned out, and you're loosely trying to tie it to something else. I used this to reference a talent evaluation philosophy I find interesting that has been successfully implemented at the professional level. "This is . . . dedication to distraction by fans. Is that what I'm going to go with Jay?"

I do follow, but I guarantee I don't follow as close as you. You clearly know more about this than most, and I acknowledge that. Were the two recruits referenced offered blind? I'm only talking about one specific comment I found interesting and tied in to an opportunistic meeting I had with Jones. Also, in some of the articles I've read on Niednagel, he generally identified the 60% attributes in a matter of minutes. The more thorough analysis tended to support what his initial thoughts were.
