New Commitment - Eric Johnson

Postby Ponymon » Sat Nov 27, 2004 8:57 am

According to the Dallas Morning News, Plano West Quarterback commits to SMU! Johnson (6'2' 210lbs.) threw for 2,887 yards and 25 TDs and rushed for 258 yds. and 6 TDs in leading Plano West to the District 8-5A Title!

Finally, it appears we have a quarterback recruit that looks like he can toss the ball! :D

at the Nike Camp he was measured at 6-1, 198 4.78 40, Bench 13, Vertical 32, Shuttle 4.43. Rivals hasn't reported his commitment yet but only prior reported offer was SMU. Not yet rated by Rivals.

Throwing for nearly 3,000 yards and 25 TDs at a 5A school is pretty impressive. And from what I gather, he's pretty mobile, too. (Chris Phillips is only a 4.6 guy, and look how well he runs .... not to suggest they're similar runners, but I can't dismiss Johnson's 4.7 40 time.)

Isn't he the younger brother of SMU reserve LB Blake Johnson? Their father played at Baylor.

Congratulations, coaches! Time to pick up some recruiting steam!

assuming this report is accurate, Johnson fills a need in this year's recruiting class and the good news is that he will be able to RS and have 5 yrs in the program to see if he will eventually contribute. He certainly put up some good numbers and I like the fact he's another local guy. The more locals Bennett is able to bring in, the better our attendance as family and friends come out to watch.

I love the fact that this guy will not play next year. With Romo, Eckert and Phillips coming back next year, this guy would have to be unstoppable in preseason to even sniff the field next year. In the past, our QB situation has been so shaky from one year to the next that freshmen always got a chance to compete. This guy will arrive next year with the intent of getting biggere, stronger and learning the offense from Coach Burns and the returning QBs. This is the way teams are supposed to build at vital spots like QB, and speaks volumes about the patience Coach Bennett has shown in laying the foundation for the future, stockpiling players at key positions so young talents like this Johnson kid can enjoy a normal learning curve, rather than being thrown in too early. This improves his chance to be ready when he does get his chance.

Not to ruin this love-fest, but over the past 2 years, no school has scored fewer points in D-1A than SMU, so if Chris Phillips went down to another injury, I could see a stud freshman QB having his redshirt yanked.

Question I have is how can a successful player from a high-profile 5-A district not be rated by Rivals nor have received offers from any other schools at this late a date. Not meant as a slight towards Johnson, I am simply asking the question.

A while on the subject of recent signees, should we be concerned that our other recent commit Langford also had not received any offers?

Nope. He's been leaning toward SMU for a long time, from what I've heard, and in many cases -- unless you're looking at a Frank Okam-type player -- some coaches will move on to the next recruit when a commitment is announced. I've asked a friend in Waco who's seen this guy play, and he says this is a very strong, stout young man who will fight tooth and nail on each and every play.

Ok ST. had him up for their game with us this fall. Coach Miles was reportedly upset when he spent the second half on our bench.

Also, I have seen Johnson play several times this year and he is the foolowing:

1. really good arm
2. good speed
3. tough minded
4. quick, Pentium II processor
5. quick release

Don't question the coaches on their ability to find and evaluate talent. Their track record is good.

Next? :D

I really have to chuckle when I read some of you guys-OK assuming that they are good at evaluating talent-how cum they are committing kids way down their own OFFER LIST. If you'd like I could list a whole string of QBs they offered before Johnson. If he was such a Blue Chipper-why didn't they offer him first.

I don't believe anyone claimed that Johnson's a blue chipper or that he was necessarily our first choice. I would like to see the QB list you've compliled though and an explanation as to how could you know the order in which we offered. TIA.

I heard the same thing. Funny.

And Cory Muse wasn't the first LB we offered his year, and Cedrick Dorsey wasn't the first (then-)DB we offered. You want to give them back? WHEN we offer doesn't matter. If we offer 99 RBs and then get the next Adrian Peterson with the 100th offer, does that mean the coaches can't evaluate talent? No.

Keep after them, coaches!
