Ponies Add Pair Of JuCo Standouts
Cox & Goode To Enroll In January

DALLAS (SMU) – The SMU football team has signed two junior college additions for the 2005 season, Head Coach Phil Bennett announced today. Linebacker Clayton Cox and defensive back Randall Goode will enter SMU in January and participate in spring practice.

Cox (6-3, 225), from Garden City C.C. in Kansas, is rated as a three-star recruit according to Rivals.com following a 51-tackle season in 2004. The Weston, Kan., native was also named an honorable mention All-Jayhawk Conference performer after recording 19 quarterback pressures, seven tackles-for-loss and six sacks in his sophomore season. He selected SMU over an offer from Baylor.

Goode (5-11, 190) will arrive on the Hilltop from Navarro J.C. in nearby Corsicana, Texas. The safety notched 99 tackles in 2004, good for fourth-best in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference. He is also a former high school sprinter, finishing third in the 100- and 200-meter dashes at the 2002 Texas State 3A Championships. The Rivals two-star recruit also had offers from New Mexico and Southwest Missouri State.

”We are excited to get both Clayton and Randall,” said Bennett. “They’re both very versatile players. Clayton can play at linebacker or even at defensive end in passing situations, while Randall can line up at safety or corner.”

The junior college signing period runs until Jan. 15, and the high school period begins on Feb. 2. SMU’s spring practice kicks off on Sat., Mar. 5.

"It’s hard to overstate how impressive SMU has been on the recruiting trail since the ACC announced the Mustangs would be joining the league”

I'm really glad to get these guys, but was hoping for a few more. The announcement states that the JUCO signing period runs through January 15th, so hopefully there are a few more yet to sign.

GO GET 'EM COACHES!!!

I'm right there with you, but one thing I know about Coach Bennett is that he doesn't sign guys just to say he signed them. He's extremely particular about who he signs, and that's a good thing. If he doesn't find a junior college guy who really blows his doors off, he's more than likely going to add more HS guys who will have a longer stay at the school.
