A home visit last week from UTEP coach Mike Price led to a verbal commitment from Hemet (Calif.) High School's Brandis Dew, the Miners' top quarterback recruit.
The highly-recruited Dew, who led California in touchdown passes this season with 42 in 10 games, confirmed Sunday that he has pledged to sign with UTEP on national signing day, Feb. 2. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound pro-style QB said he chose the Miners over scholarship offers from defending national champion LSU and Big 12 school Colorado.
"It just seemed like a fit," Dew said of UTEP, which he visited the weekend of the Boise State game (Sept. 18). "Coach Price was ecstatic when I called and told him I was coming. They want me to come in and redshirt, then take over at quarterback."
Price and his staff, who led the Miners to an 8-3 record and a berth in the EV1.net Houston Bowl in their first season, cannot comment on specific recruits until they sign a letter of intent. UTEP is expected to have as many as 25 scholarships to offer the Class of 2005.
Dew's father, Richard, said Price told him his son was UTEP's "No. 1 recruit out of the whole recruiting class."
"The fact they think he can be their quarterback of the future," Richard Dew said, "and the fact that Coach Price flew all the way to Hemet just to come see Brandis was important to us. No other head coach did that."
Dew was scheduled to make late visits to LSU and Colorado.
"We're cancelling everything else -- UTEP is where we're going," said Dew's father, who played at Hemet in the early 1980s with Miner assistant coach Jim Clark. "When you go out looking for a house and you find the one you want, there's no need to look any further."
Dew, who also played defensive end at Hemet but wanted to play quarterback in college, completed 58.2 percent of his passes for 2,805 yards and 10 interceptions this season. He finished the year with a lofty quarterback rating of 147.
"The most amazing thing about Brandis is his physical stature as a quarterback," Hemet High coach Andy Boynton said. "He's 6-6 and 250 pounds, but he doesn't move like he's 6-6 and 250 pounds. He's extremely mobile (4.71 seconds in the 40-yard dash)."
Dew led Hemet High to a 9-0 record before his team was upset in the first round of the playoffs.
"With some of the quarterbacks Coach Price has developed in the past, like Drew Bledsoe and Ryan Leaf," Boynton said, "I think they see Brandis in the same mold -- big, strong and athletic. And he's got a cannon for an arm."
Boynton said Dew, who Rivals.com considers a three-star recruit and one of the top 500 high school seniors in the nation, has a 3.0 to 3.5 grade point average.
"His character just stands out," Boynton said. "He's very humble. We're in Riverside County, kind of tucked away in this small-town atmosphere. Brandis is the biggest thing to happen in Hemet in a long time, if not ever. And he's handled it all really well."
