WASHINGTON STATE linebackers coach Leon Burtnett stopped by Lamat High in Arlington, Texas, this morning to talk with linebacker K.J. Ellis. Linebacker is a position of emphasis for the Cougs right now and we asked Ellis if the visit from the Cougs came with an offer. We also found out there are two new schools on his radar.
As of today, the Cougs have not offered K.J. Ellis, the 6-2, 200-pound linebacker out of Lamar High.
Washington State linebackers coach Leon Burtnett was down in the Lone Star state today and had a chance to visit with Ellis in person at his school and then later on the phone.
"I got the chance to talk to them a little bit today," said Ellis, who racked up over 175 tackles his junior and senior years. "It wasn't a long time because we had to get back to class and our schedule is kind of off (coming out of the Holiday break). And then he called me just a few minutes ago so we could finish up.
"The situation is they're waiting on one holdout and they should (know in the next week or so). And then there's the coaches' clinic coming up so there's not too many visits that they're doing this week. As soon as they get information back from him, they're going to let me know so that's all I'm waiting on with that situation."
So it looks to be another week or so before Ellis will know if he'll receive an offer from Washington State. He has been offered by New Mexico, Colorado and SMU although the offers from the latter two also appear to be dependent on other factors.
Ellis is also getting increased interest from two new schools of late -- Utah and a school just down the street, Texas Christian.
"I just started talking again to the new staff at Utah, which was nice that I got a chance to meet with them. And for the first time throughout this entire recruiting process I heard from TCU, which was kind of weird being that I live 15 minutes away. I got a chance to talk to them and they're going to evaluate my tape. I should be hearing something back from them around next week as well."
Colorado also remains a possibility for Ellis, the Buffs recently postponed his scheduled official trip after receiving a verbal commitment from a wide receiver, telling Ellis they needed to now focus on offensive linemen as their class is filling up. However, that WR has since de-committed from Colorado and verballed to Kansas.
Ellis is a two-time All-District first team selection on defense, splitting time primarily between outside linebacker and safety. He projects as a linebacker for most schools, including Washington State. A team captain for Lamar, Ellis carries a 3.0 core GPA and scored an 1170 on the SAT.
