Late Signee/Walkon?

Postby Stallion » Tue Jul 26, 2005 9:11 am

the roster published in the DMN for the THSCA All-Star Game lists a LM J.D. Medford 6-3, 260 from Troup as going to SMU next year. Could be a walkon or even a late signee.

Wasn't he talked about before signing day? The name sounds real familiar.

he is from State 2A Finalist Troup-think they lost the state championship by 1 point. Looks like he can play both Offensive and defensive lineman and has received some recognition for both. The East Texas Guru Smoaky.com named him First Team All-East Texas as an Offensive Guard(All classifications). On the other side of the ball Texas Prep X-tra named him second team All-East Texas as a DLM (all classifications)

This all sounds so familiar. Troup, Medford, lineman, I swear this guy was mentioned before.

Hey, Stallion, I was looking at the roster for the All Star game, where are these "undecided" players going? Is "undecided" a codeword for "fat and slow" or "can't qualify"? There is a 300 lb lineman from Killeen listed as undecided (although smoaky.com shows him going to TVCC, so I guess he didn't qualify).

they probably aren't Division 1A caliber. I believe this All-Star game requires that an equal number of players come from each classification ie 5A-A. I know I heard that is a rule in the BB game which was televised last Nite. So those kids are probably 1A or 2A kids or kids with academic issues who aren't recruiting prospects. This game has never been about the most highly recruited prospects although some do appear.

Maybe you're thinking of Colleyville (Heritage) tight J.B. Hill? He received a little recruiting attention last year, but I believe he's among this year's walk-ons. Or at least he's supposed to be, from what I hear. Unless he changed his mind, of course.
Supposed to be a pretty decent player.
Don't have any stats/measurables on him, though. Sorry.

Maybe he's more athletic than some. He was named second-team all-District 19-2A in basketball this year.

He also made the First Team all-Smoaky.com team, which is run by a recruitnik from East Texas. I have no idea if he knows what he's talking about. But it looks to me like he included all classes, and if this guy made first team all-state from all classes, that says something, I guess.

I remember Cavan taking a chance on a guy from Troup a few years back and that opne worked out pretty well. If this guy is not on scholarship, let's hope he can earn one next year.

And while we'd all like to see the 6'5", 330-pound linemen lining up at Coach Bennett's door, 6'3" and 260 -- especially if he projects as a guard or center -- isn't bad for an 18-year-old. Just think back to the days when Coach Gregg was signing 230-pound guys and hoping they'd grow into the 260-280 range.

I doubt thet he is bigger than 6-1.5 but he also is a lot stronger than I thought he'd be. Must have a little athleticm to make All State teams on offense and defense as well as All-District in BB plus he is agile enough to Kick off to the 5 yard line. Its been a long time since I saw a guy with his dimensions do that.

BTW the Tyler paper said Medlock recorded 4 tackles-not a bad performance.

Better yet, let's hope he's a stud and for some reason feels inclined to pay his own way .... so we can have an extra scholarship! (Who am I kidding -- if he earns a scholarship, he earns it.)
