All these Texas HS players verballing, and yet not one to usThis list is supposed to be up to date as of yesterday. If it isn't, don't shoot the messenger.

Tulsa just picked up two more Cedar Hill kids -remember their big haul from that school last year. One of the new recruits was very highly recruited-had about 5 offers -the other one was a big ole (but also slow) DLM that listed some interest in SMU but really hadn't been offered by many schools yet. BTW Tulsa had their Senior Camp on the same date as SMU.
Norton and Washington? Tulsa Golden Hurricane Joseph Agnew SL Carroll DB 6'0 180 4.7 Jerrell Norton Cedar Hill QB 6'1 175 4.6 Brandon Washington Cedar Hill OT 6'5 315 5.2
Norton sounds like a good pickup for the Windstorm. Washington, not so good.
well I'd agree but the Washington kid looks huge and I noticed he's pretty darn strong too-looks like a mountain at 6-2, 307 but it looks like somewhat of a project to get rid of what I'm assuming is a lot of baby fat. I'm assuming that's why he doesn't have many offers-SMU could have had some real interest. I dunno its hard to compare these high school lineman who are 6-5 230 running 4.7s with guys who are 6-2, 307 running 5.48s. Quite frankly some times I wonder whether Brandon Bonds could run a 5.48 especially last year. Plus for defensive lineman quickness is probably much more important. If you need a DLM to run forty yards to make a play you are in big trouble.
Were are the SMU commitments? This is ridiculous to say the least! Bennett may very well be on his way out of SMU. I understand that we may lose out on recruits to Big 12 / BCS schools. But we are absolutely getting embarressed by our out of state conference rivals, i.e., Tulsa, Tulane, etc. Temember that Tulsa also has done a great job of getting Juco and Division 1-A transfers the last few years who will play a big part in their success this year. There are real problems with the way SMU's football program is being run. It does not look like the future is very bright for the few of us fans that are left.
Folks, relax. Yes, I want to see a list of commitments as much as anyone. But at this time last year, how many did we have? Zero? One? The year before, we had one (Vincent Chase). July commitments aren't going to determine whether Coach Bennett is "on his way out of SMU" or staying forever. The list in February is what matters.
let's win a game or two in September and see what happens. At this point, Bennett and his staff are probably looking at a bunch of guys who are anything but sure bets even at the level of play in CUSA, so I wouldn't be surprised for them to wait to see how some of these guys' senior seasons go before offering. It's not like we are in a race with BCS programs to fill up our class. We've seen before how a guy who commits to SMU (Chris Hall) can be swayed by a BCS offer.
CP, During the Bennett era, outside of Chris Hall, can you name 3 quality players that committed to SMU first, then went elsewhere…or 3 quality players who committed to another school before changing their mind and committing to SMU? I can’t. I suspect these early commitments mean more today than they use to.
SMUFan, I wouldn’t use last years’ class as a reason why we shouldn’t worry today, just the opposite IMO.
Ricky Joe Meeks was a state top 100 QB who committed early to SMU and and from where I sit, appears to have provided some momentum for Bennett and his staff in putting together a pretty decent class. While some of the highest rated guys don't seem to be panning out, I will readily admit that getting some high profile guys to commit early can have a huge affect on putting a good class together. Unfortunately, there aren't any studs out there who are going to jump on an SMU offer as the one they've been waiting/hoping for. Hall would have been a good signing, but I think Bennett is doing pretty well with that "next tier" of linemen.
My whole point was that SMU is a long ways from competing for talent with BCS schools and winning our share of those battles. We need to field some winning teams to get more guys' attention...but I think we will find out in the next year or two how well Bennett and his staff have done finding and developing that "next level" guy.
