Why? Not enough to complain about?
People leave at every school. In the past, we had such poor depth that we couldn't afford to lose anyone. As the depth is increasing, attrition still hurts, but not as much. Attrition is not a Bennett issue. If anything, he's more loyal to his players than most coaches. (How many other coaches would have honored Robert Gilmore's scholarship after that horrific knee injury that made other schools back off? Bennett should be lauded for his loyalty, not bashed because some folks leave when they see the writing on the wall when it comes to prospective playing time.)

Since bennett's first recruiting class in 02, 20 have left the program. This includes Desmond Jones, whom I have heard may be back.

For a better indication of our record over the last three years, let's look back and see who left the program under Cavan. Those are the players that would have been here during our "no win" season.

For a couple of examples, what was the receiver's name that left and went to play at Minnesota, Brewer? Didn't a couple of other players from that year go with him? What was the story on the LB that was so highly rated and never played here? Josh McCown. Of course, he can play in the NFL but he was no good in college. We didn't need him anyway.

Caballo...did you watch the Josh McCown years? Whether it was the system that Cavan had or the team around him doesn't matter, based on his numbers and play, it wasn't a sad day when he chose to leave the program.

Whatever happened to James Elliott? Where did he wind up going?

Me, I did watch McCown. Admittedly, Josh was having a pretty poor year if I remember correctly. I think his INT to TD ratio was terrible. I also admit that I did not sit through one team meeting while he was here so I have no inside information as to what was going on with him and the team, but the thing that strikes me as being curious is that he was successful in HS, and successful when he transferred from SMU, and one could make the argument that he has been "successful" in even making a team and playing in the NFL. So what was the problem while he was here?

It "was not a sad day when he chose to leave the program" because it allowed for us to get some playing time for David Page and Kelan Luker. And we were really able to capitalize on their experience later on down the road. Especially during our winless season.

Why do you people always make excuses for when things go bad regarding SMU football? How can you guys say with a straight face that it was not a bad thing when McCown tranferred? He was going to be are starting QB for his senior year. And do not place all of the blame on him for his interceptions. It take a line to block properly and receivers to get open. I also remember most of the time we were down by three touchdowns so we were forced to throw every play. McCown was one of the better QBs we have had in a decade as evidenced by his current profession. I cannot wait for you guys to make excuses when Phillips leaves the program.

I was not making excuses about the program, quite the opposite in fact. Josh McCown has turned out to be better than most could have thought when watching him at SMU. He is obviously one of the top 100 qbs (very conservatively) in the country or he wouldn't be on a pro team.

The point is that I hate when I read about how horrible Cavan or Bennett or whoever was for letting talent leave the program and then pointing to a player that was not a superstar when he was here. Point is lets not get hypocritical and dream of the good old days of McCown when fans weren't exactly singing McCown's praises when he started for SMU nor when he was leaving. We all weren't missing him to much when Page was winning games, infact barely thought of him until I was shocked to see him be drafted. Hindsight is 20/20!

The comment about utilizing Page and Luker's experience makes no sense. Think we would have won more ballgames if McCown had stayed for the next year and taking the playing time from them? How would that have helped us with a 0 win season the following season? McCown still would have been gone and Page and Luker if they had stayed would have no experience.

The comment about Page and Luker was in regard to players leaving the program. The point being that players leave college football programs all the time, for their own personal reasons (ie. accounting or rock and roll) or for reasons that they feel are caused by coaches.

I for one was not happy that McCown left. I thought he had potential that was not met here, whether that was his fault or through no fault of his own. I readily admit though that I never thought he would play in the NFL.

And it was a good thing when Steve Nash moved on, so the Mavs could get some playing time for Jason Terry. Come on....
