Did I read it here, or did I dream it that one of UT's oral committments is from an OL from Wimberely named Buck Burnette and that his Dad is Grady Burnette, former Mustang lineman and stable door opener for the Pony Express.

When we start losing our legacy recruits to a former hated rival, that shows where we are. Even though Buck does not remember us being rivals, Grady does. Any idea if we recruited Burnette? Anything other than a recruiting letter, that is.

You keep forgetting that we can't and don't pay for recruits any longer, but the BCS and Big 12 are still allowed that privilege.

Again, we deserved the punishment we got, but boy, UT frosts me. That said, rumor has it that their football coach is a stickler for the rules which is why UNC didn't renew his contract.

Remember when UT was recruiting a player named Edwin Simmons who was the stud running back of his class. An assistant coach took him to a western wear store while Simmons was on a recruiting trip and personally bought him a pair of boots. No penalties.

I contacted David Berst of the NCAA when the Simmons incident occured and asked why they would not investigate. He said, and I still have the letter somewhere, that it was an honest mistake of the kid walking out of the store forgetting that he had the boots on and this in no way compared to SMU's problems (the latter with which I agree.) He was adament that there would be no investigation of this particular incident. However, approximately 1 or 2 years later, UT was investigated for another impropriety, and was put on a non-penalizing probation. When I read the list of infractions involved in the probation, I was surprised to see that they included the purchase of boots for a former player by an assistant coach. Thus, the infraction was pushed under the carpet, never to be discussed again.

The investigation process is not fair, but anyone would be hard pressed to say that SMU did not deserve harsh punishement for its actions. The death penalty will never be used again after the outcome and result has been witnessed, even though most of our problems for the past several years have been self imposed. It is like the atomic bomb. It was needed to end WWII, and was used without knowing what the actual results would be, but I question whether or not it will ever be used again other than as a deterent by sensible nations now that the results are known.

As I have long said, we will know that SMU is back when we no longer have to preface our remarks with "since the death penalty".

Let's just say that to me it is probably like Granny Smith's to Braeburns.

The point is, I know what we did was wrong. I do not condone, nor do I defend the stupidity of any Mustang supporters at that time in continuing payments and incentives when we were clearly in the cross hairs of the NCAA. Especially when people associated with the school are involved in any improprieties.

UT was/is one of the major offenders of NCAA rules violations, but the powers that be will never even investigate allegations that are leveled against them. And, when any investigation "efforts" are put forth in a minimal way the improprieties are simply swept under the rug.

I used to get sick and tired of my friends at other schools laughing and saying we were "cheaters" and several sentences later laugh about how old so and so that plays running back got a new 280 ZX from Joe Booster. They could never see the double standard in that. I guess neither can you.

As I mentioned in another post, the head of the NCAA rules committee at the time drove an ORANGE Cadillac. His name was Charles Wright and he had a [deleted] for SMU!
