Texas DT ready to impress
A prospect that coaches at Iowa and Northwestern will be keeping a close eye on this year is Jesse Trejo, a 6-foot-2, 285-pound, defensive tackle, from Baytown (Texas) Lee. Trejo will be a three-year starter for the Fighting Ganders in 2005 and several schools are beginning to get in contact with him.
“Right now I don’t have any offers,†Jesse Trejo said. “I’ve gotten a lot of mail and I’m hoping that the offers will come during the year.
“We have a big-time prospect (James Cleveland) here right now, so that will be my time to shine as well. I know college coaches will be coming to watch James (Cleveland) but hopefully they notice me as well.â€
Lee head coach [deleted] Olin says college recruiters won’t be able to help but notice Trejo this year.
“Jesse Trejo could be one of the most underrated prospects in Texas.†Coach Olin said.
“Jesse will be a three-year starter for us this year. He plays offensive guard but I think he can be a great defensive tackle in college. When we put Jesse on defense during scrimmages, nobody can block him.
“Jesse is very strong and he has some of the quickest hands I’ve seen on a lineman. Once he gets those hands of his under the pads of the defender, it’s over.
“Like I said before, I feel Jesse could play guard or center in college. He’s extremely intelligent (3.8 GPA) but he could be an absolute dominant defensive tackle in college. Plus, Jesse isn’t very nice on the football field and recruiters will love that about him.â€
Trejo doesn’t have a scholarship offer yet but he does have some schools on his wish list.
“I like Iowa, Iowa State, Northwestern, SMU, TCU and Tulane right now,†Trejo said.
“Iowa obviously because of Drew (Tate), Iowa has a great squad. I’m very into academics and Northwestern is one of the best schools in the country.
“It’s hard to name favorites when you’re looking for scholarship offers. I’m open right now. I don’t mind going to play football away from home. I’m completely open.â€
