Zack Eskridge - Rockwall QB

One of the best kept secrets in the metroplex but probably not for long. 6'4", 205lb with a cannon for an arm - not bad wheels either. SMU is looking at him but can't offer him as a QB because they gave away the QB scholarship spot to the kid down south. Too bad as Zack has a huge upside. Unfortunately, Baylor has picked up the scent on this kid.

Signed two last year.
Signed two (JUCOs) the year before.
No reason we couldn't sign two this year, if the mood strikes.

Eskridge is getting attention. Im lived next door to him and his family and they are good people.
His sister is a Grad. asst. for the team now and tapes up the guys.
With the new coach at Rockwall, it will be interesting to see if Zach gets to air it out.

For what it's worth, rivals says he's 6-3, 195, 4.65. Whatever his dimensions, Eskridge was one of the recruits at SMU's opener against Baylor.
Another in attendance was Carrollton (Newman Smith) OL/DL Jesse Funk (6-2.5, 256, 5.35, per rivals).

I'm sorry, but part of this just doesnt make sense. Cant offer him as a QB? Says who? Its not like there is a rule against it, or something.
There's no reason why a team cant sign 2 QB prospects, if they really want both. Quarterbacks who are versatile athletes get moved to different positions all the time. And more importantly, around here quarterbacks seem to leave all the time. Bartel, Wallis, Meeks, Hodges, just to name the most recent. Who was the last starting quarterback to actually play out all four years of eligibility at SMU? Sadly, I'm almost sure it was Flanigan.
If you genuinely want both players, if both of them are capable of improving your team, there isnt any reason to not pursue both. In the spring, after the annual round of 10-15 players quitting and transferring, I'm sure we'll have enough scholarships. And even if we dont, that hasnt stopped us in the past. Didnt we sign 26 or something last year? 4 more than we had scholarships to give? I cant buy the line about not being able to offer him as a QB because we've already committed that one and only scholarship. Call him a wide reciever if that makes you feel better. If he's good enough to play (which I honestly dont know) then there's no reason not to recruit him.

That's true. Call him a punter -- we'll need one.
See everyone at the game - GO MUSTANGS!

BTW the new Coach at Rockwall referenced is former HP, Baylor and SMU(coach) Scott Smith isn't it?

Says the coaching staff. He was told he would be recruited as an "athlete" - probably wide receiver. Baylor wants him as a "quarterback." By the way, 17 of 19 for several touchdowns and 245 yards Friday night.

Thats nothing but semantics, and it contradicts your initial claim that we couldnt offer him a scholarship. Its a football scholarship, not a QB scholarship or an "athlete" scholarship. Its a scholarship to play on the football team, not at a certain position. Players get moved to different positions all the time, particularly quarterbacks, because they do tend to be good athletes. Calling it an "athlete" scholarship doesnt mean anything. He could still play quarterback, or any other position.
Just a thought, but if SMU really wanted him, it might have been a better idea to wait until after he signed before telling him he wouldnt have a shot at playing QB.

Read my post, XTC. I said "can't offer him as a quarterback."
By the way, I certainly wouldn't want to do business with you. Sign him first and then tell him he won't have a shot as a QB???? That's just great - just what Bennett needs to do. Get the reputation as a liar to the recruits. Please..............

1. he will not get to air it out there.. his coach is scott smith who was my coach for three years at HP... they will run the veer and midline at thats it...
2. Scott Smith went to Baylor and was all SWC there for a yr i think..
3. He does nothing to help his kids get scholarships.. the only one I can think of that he helped was Grant Sumner in '96 and he was DMN all area qb .. and was one hell of an option qb.. would have been great in HP offense now also.. kind of like Bill Foran
