High School Playoffs

it looks like Highland Park advanced to the 4A State Championship with a last minute 41-38 victory over Stephenville and Southlake beat Plano despite a big 27-14 lead by Plano (28 straight points by Plano) until Carroll's big comeback to win something like 39-27. How did the Plano Running Back Jordan do?

HP - Stephenville game was outstanding. Probably 20,000 in a 30,000 capacity venue made for a big time feel. Neither team could stop the other's offense all day. HP had 2 interceptions and a fumble. SHS inexpicably threw an interception on 2nd and 7 at their own 30 with just over three minutes remaining. A single first down would have almost iced the game for SHS. HP gets it and scores with about 35 seconds left on 3rd and 5 from the 5.

Great high school football game. Trick plays, misdirection, double reverses, reverse screens, direct snaps to RBs, etc. Nothing ended up the way it first looked to be going. The coaches put on a clinic as to how modern football is played. Nary a huddle all day. Very hard fought with neither team giving an inch.

Among the scoring plays:

HP:
40 yard pass
70 yard double flea flicker pass
27 yard pass on 4th and 17

SHS:
80 yard pass
15 yard pass on 4th down (I think)
94 yard run with 8 min left on 1st play after stopping HP on 4th down from the 6

Both quarterbacks were very good. They appear about the same height (6-3 or so) with Stafford a bit thicker. He is a big boy. SHS's Snead (?) is more mobile. Snead runs the option (with inside and outside pitch options) very well and he was very impressive with less of a supporting cast. HP's Stafford has so many weapons. His arm is a rocket as he put ball after ball in the gut of well-covered receivers. The winning touchdown pass could not have been placed better.

Stafford's stats are likely a bit better but HP gets so much yardage after the catch it can be a bit misleading.

In a nutshell, both QBs looked great, excepting only Snead's final interception. That was ill-advised.

Highland Park will play the Marshall Mavericks for the STATE TITLE in Class 4A Division I next weekend. Game time and location still TBA.

The Marshall Mavericks defeated the Pflugerville-Connally Cougars, 24-17, to advance to the state championship game against the Highland Park Scots.

Every time you cheer for Bennett, if you do, you are cheering for a Maverick, baby.

Go to the General threads for a little Mav smack talking.
Unfortunately, I will not be able to attend, as my brother in law is returning from Iraq, and the decommissioning ceremony is supposed to be Saturday afternoon at Floyd Casey in Waco @ same time.

Not happy that I will miss it, but soldiers returning from Iraq is a little more sobering and I gotta be there. It's family.

God bless your brother, OC. Glad to hear he's returning home.

I expect Bennett will be at the game on Saturday since his son is on the HP team.

Thanks for the sentiment for my brother-in-law! It tears me up...he has three boys, and for their father to be away a year...right, wrong, or indifferent about the war itself, it just feels like a year with their old man has been stolen. It will be truly good to have him home.

Ah yes, Sam Bennett is indeed on the team. I wondered as much in the other thread. Makes sense. Is great that Coach Phil will be there.

I have to ask, but I heard from a friend that somebody from HP is on a high school football forum, and this person has the funniest avatar...some dude with a kilt baring his bare gluteus....

If somebody knows where this avatar is, please, please, let me know. I gotta see it!
