Per Friday's Dallas Morning News: Former Southlake (Carroll) linebacker Pete Fleps (6-2, 225, 4.6) has enrolled at SMU. A former HS teammate of SMU offensive lineman Mitch Enright, Fleps chose Navy out of high school before returning home this season. In addition to SMU and Navy, he was offered a scholarship last year by Tulsa, and was recruited this year by Baylor before choosing SMU.

So he is eligible this year or next?

He is eligible in 2007 since he needs to sit out a year per NCAA rules.

Sounds like a coup! Way to go Bennett! :)

if he never enrolled he could be immediately eligible-and that's what I've heard.

I thought if you signed a LOI then even if you didn't enroll you couldn't transfer without sitting a year?

If he enrolled, then transferred at the semester, he will lose out a year a la the aTm QB Brandon Stewart that enrolled at Tennessee and at the semester transferred to aTm (who ended up getting his year back after his 4 were up).

If he didn't enroll, then he is free to play immediately, and by enrolling now, he is effectively a grayshirt from the '05 recruiting season.

If he enrolled and then dropped out without completing a semester, then he is probably eligible, but that depends on NCAA (not interpretation, I just don't know the rule)

After saying that I checked the NCAA and found this little guide. Sounds like we might get Felps this year if he never enrolled or practiced with the team.

My impression is that he's eligible immediately.

From what I just read, sounds like he would only be eligible in this circumstance if Navy didn't have a football program which they do. So let's hope for not enrolling, never practicing!

can he play and is he physically ready? No reason to worry about eligibility next season unless he is that good for a freshman. Somebody around here must remember him from Southlake.

Heard from someone that he has apnea or something. The military isn't real keen on that particular health issue. Their loss is our gain.

Actually, the information came third hand to me...was originally a comment by a recruiting guy at DMN.

I don't think he actually had sleep apnea. He did have a stint where he wasn't sleeping enough, but he's fine, he's much stronger than he was a year ago and he's ready to play. And for those who are into such things, at least one publication named him first-team all-state for his senior year.

He would be eligible this fall ('06).
