SMU has offered V.J. McElroy. He is a 5'11 180 pound quarterback for Uvalde that put up over 1200 yards passing and 6 touchdown passes in 2004. McElroy can also run the ball, as he used his sub 4.4 speed in the forty to run for 1056 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also can return kicks and play defensive back as well. V.J. is a three year starter for UHS on the football team but by the time his career is done he will have lettered all four years in track and baseball. V.J. posts impressive numbers in the weight room as he bench presses 260 pounds, squats 515 pounds and he has a vertical leap of 34 inches. V.J. also has an impressive shuttle time of 3.99 seconds. The versatile Uvalde senior to be has earned all district honors in 2004 and 2005 as a kick returner and last year earned honorable mention honors at QB. Despite those strong numbers at QB McElroy sees himself playing defensive back in college.

McElroy says SMU, Baylor and Texas Tech are at the top of his list. (Only SMU has offered so far.) Besides those three, Arizona, Texas, Texas A&M, TCU and Oklahoma State are all in the mix. In the summer of 2004, V.J first started to make a name for himself in mini-camps at SMU and Baylor. V.J. says besides playing seven on seven this summer he'll attend mini-camps at Texas Tech and possibly Baylor once again. He plans to major in finance. Rivals has not yet rated him.

You're too quick, Ponymon. I was about to post the same thing.

Is he considered a DB candidate for the Ponies?

If I'm not mistaken, I believe he's the son of former Oakland Raiders (and Baylor) DB Vann McElroy.

Lotus,

Usually you or Stallion end up beating me to the punch and I end up deleting the post not wanting to steal your thunder. I guess I just got lucky this time.

Hope we can get this guy! He wants to play early and would like to play DB, which is the position that Coach Bennett prides himself in. He sounds like he would be a difference maker for us!

I'm going to go into training so I'm quicker next time!

I remember reading something about this guy before the season started. It sounded like he was a very athletic, very talented DB and KR. If that's true .... sure hope he ends up at SMU!

I talked to his dad last summer, and he said his son is very interested in SMU.

Good news...

Is he related to Greg McElroy in anyway? Sounds like a promising prospect.

The random connection of the day: His dad is Vann McElroy, who is an agent and represented John Hampton a few years ago, and had a run of players out of Kansas State when Bennett was in Manhattan that are still playing in the NFL, unlike Hampton.

Didn't his dad play defensive back for Baylor in the early 80s?

Yup. One and the same.
I must be slipping -- I thought this kid was a 2006 prospect. I need to pay closer attention!

Just noticed that McElroy made Texas Football's list of top juniors as an athlete. I hope we can get him!

New article in Rivals indicates that we are still at the top of the list. Baylor is a consideration and, reportedly, has extended a verbal offer. He also is interested in Tech. He ran a 4.32 forty at our camp last year and, evidentally, did the same thing at Baylor, which got him the verbal offer.

good to see that we are at least making some eraly offers. I read today where Clemson already has 5 commitments for their class of 2007. It's happening earlier and earlier as the top programs start to squeeze these kids early in the process. Haven't decided yet whether that's a good thing or bad thing for 2nd tier schools like SMU.

So what position would SMU be recruiting this guy to play?

Doesn't matter...lets get him in camp and figure a spot for him then!

Honestly, I think this kid is about to blow up and we will have to fight hard to keep his interest

I would guess (based on size and speed) either CB or WR (where we're graduating a ton of guys next year -- Chase, Pellerin, Cleveland, Warren, Sledge .... we need to collect some more WRs).
