SMU Legacies?

Postby smudad » Tue Jan 31, 2006 8:13 am

I read, with envy, this article in Sunday's paper about Clint Renfro from South Lake Carroll.

I couldn't help wonder if there are or will be any kids like this out there in our future with super talent and who are so enamored of playing for SMU, other schools just never have a chance. Having watched this kid play for the last two years, I look forward to seeing him play at TCU. As a HS Jr., he already had better instincts and fundamentals than most college receivers. But, almost as good as his talent, is his citizenship and his family loyalty to TCU. I hope we get some like this in the future. They want to be at SMU just because Dad played here. And Dad was a stud, as is the kid.

Sturdivant would probably be in that category

Sturdivant does qualify.
I've also heard Russell Carter has a son who's in 10th (maybe) grade, and is considered a very promising prospect. Whether we're after him, I have no idea. If nothing else, it couldn't hurt to have his dad come around more often.

so many people want to dismiss Renfro as 'white guy" in a big passing offense. This kid has all kinds of skill and talent. He can run with Jamal Charles-that's good enough for me. How many "white kids" finish 2nd in a State 5A Track Meet as a SOPHMORE and Junior. He probably needs to redshirt but I bet he's a thorn in our [deleted] for years.

yes. that has been the backbreaker of our football program. if only we were getting those twenty parade all-americans every year who are sons of hercules...er...sons of smu all americans from days of yesteryear.

Renfro is without question a talented guy. However, for what it's worth (which might be nothing), I've been told by people with no personal or professional affiliation to either SMU or TCU that Rice commitment Evan Fentriss might be the most productive college receiver among him, Renfro and Jacobson, who's headed to BYU or Utah or someplace.

Renfro has been running past (he has embarrassed them) really fast DB's in really good programs for two years now. Then, he has great hands. Then, he almost never has anything 'jarred' out of his hands because of his tendancy and ability to get the ball back into his body before any collision - either with the ground or the DB. Ya think maybe Dad & Grandad had anything to do with those fundamentals? If TCU has to redshirt him, it will be to let him grow a bit, not teach him to play college football.

I didn't get to see Ray Renfro play at NTSU. But, I did see him at Cleveland. I think Clint is a combination of all the good of his Grand Dad and his Dad. We may see this kid play for a while yet. I only hope they don't allow attempts to add size impact his speed. He's really fun to watch when he turns on the burners. I agree with Stallion, he'll be a load when we play them in future years. But, SMU never had a prayer with this kid.

BTW did you notice that article in the paper that said Ray Renfro ran a 9.5 100 and ran in a qualifying meet for the Olympics.

I think more than a few former NFL DB's can help you there. I think it said only a bout with mono kept him out of the Olympic trials. I'm supposing that would have been Bobby Morrow, et al he would competed against.
