Anyone Not Pleased......with this class hasn't been paying attention this year. It's an incredible class considering where we were late fall. It's the proverbial rabbit out of hat and all SMU fans should be tickled. Bennett's managed to maintain momentum, something Cavan could not do.
Welcome to SMU all new recruits!
Point to be made about ratings.
We got some 3 star people. From what I watched tonight.. I'll take them and be happy. Two or three years down the line, these players will be good. The rankings mean something and I would like all 5 star people. PB has brought talent and speed to SMU. This year he did it again. Go Mustangs. As for the nay-sayers. See you at a bowl game next year. Yes... I'm a positive person ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() See no negative faces Love Ya.. Mean It. ![]() Mustang Militia: Fight the good fight"
PB made a great point in the press conference too: A lot of our guys come from rural areas and don't get the looks others do = undervalued.
Also, consider the development of unheralded: Bobby Chase, Cory Muse, Justin Rogers, etc. Given the scholarship limitations I think the class is solid. I would have liked to see some more SLC kids, or maybe someday a 4 star...
We need to win now and recruiting's going to take care of itself.. Quarterback's a question mark, but our increasingly effective offensive weapons -- DeMyron Martin, Bobby Chase to name a couple -- combined with the fact that we're getting 16 new redshirt freshmen to add to the mix make me optimistic for next year. Heck, DeMyron alone might carry this team. He's that special player we've lacked for some time.
Please. Corey Muse and Justin Rogers were not unheralded. Corey Muse was one of the best players in Oklahoma. I also believe Justin Rogers received several offers from BCS schools. I hope you 'believers' are right about the players we got but I will believe it when I see it on the field with wins and a bowl game. In other words, let's not put the cart before the horse folks. Here is a promise...if SMU makes a bowl game next year, then the beer is on me.
Not true about Rogers, he was a true sleeper.
One nice thing is that with the depth we have built over the last couple of years, we are actually going to be able to accurately judge our team at QB and OLB in the spring. The JUCO LB and the QB are the most important players going into spring. Those are our two weakest positions. Stallion, you would have liked what Bennett said at the meeting tonight. His theme really was "It is time to start expecting more from the program". He talked about how last season set the bar higher. About how his goal is to win the conference from here on out. But, he said don't get mad if we have some injuries and have to settle for going to a bowl. That is the kind of attitude I want at SMU, and I think that anyone who was there was pretty fired up about it. This is not a "great" class, but it is solid. If you look at the offers that each of our players got, this is an average non-BCS recruiting class. Which also happens to be about where our average star ranking of 83 puts us on rivals, give or take a couple of spots. Bennett has shown to me that he and his assistants are fantastic talent evaluators. They HAVE hit on a lot of people that nobody knew about at the start of the recruiting process in the past. Rhodes and Gonzales are great examples of it this year; I would also throw Bon, Degroat, Sowe, and Jones into the category of unknowns who look great athletically on film and look like good finds this year. In the past classes, you have Chase, Dorsey, Kennedy, Warren, Cleveland, Urbanus, Guidry, Rogers, Bonds, McCray, Carrington, Turner, Jones all as players nobody new about who have contributed in a positive way to the program. So, I will take "average" on paper. Because although this class doesn't have as many highly regarded recruits as some of the past classes, this class has less "reaches" than classes in the past, and those reaches ended up being good players.
Rogers was a guy who drew laughter on this board (including from me, I admit) when he signed. A 205-pound DE? As Coach Bennett said yesterday, I sure wouldn't trade him now. Maybe Taylor Bon or Tyler Jones can be the next Rogers-like growth-and-success story.
Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
Agreed. Does anyone know which of the times came from their coaches and which came from an actual camp? I'm just curious. I really hope they're all legit. But I can't help but find it unlikely that ALL of our LB recruits run a 4.5 flat, since Jerry Rice was a 4.6. Edit: Sorry, just found some answers in the "Speed" thread below. I should read before I open my piehole.
