Slim Shady - Update

Postby me@smu » Fri Feb 17, 2006 9:17 am

Darrell Arthur has dropped Indiana from consideration after Mike Davis announced his resignation. This leaves the list at 3, Kansas, SMU and Baylor!

Kansas leads but the list is getting shorter...can we dream of Bill Self resigning by the end of the season???

New AD--Hire Mike Davis!!! He brings Shady to SMU and other top recruits!! Think he would like a change to a smaller program after getting reamed by rabid Indiana fans??

Somehow he needs to know that the young studs at Kansas are just that -- studs -- and that his one-season-and-on-to-the-lottery plan might get fouled up if he actually has to split time with another HS all-America.

If he really just wants to do one season and then on to the pros, why wouldn't he just go to Baylor, where he could play against the rest of teh Big 12, show off how great he is, and get lots of pub to make a run at the NBA lottery.

The only negative for him that I could think of would be if Baylor is still on probation next year and won't play a full schedule again.

Sucks for us.

I dont think Baylor is on probation next year. The DMN had a misprint saying they were banned from non-conference play next year also, but that is apparently not the case.

You forgot to mention that he'd have to live in Waco and he'd have to go to Baylor. That's two more negatives.

yeah, but one year of living in Waco, where at least part of the time he will be elsewhere and living out of a hotel, and having a better shot at instantaneous fame and the NBA, isn't too high a price to pay.

Don't get me wrong, I want him here, even if it is only for a year, because I hope someone of his caliber can do something special for the school, but if his goal is one year and then the NBA, he isn't going to be doing that here, and honestly probably not at Baylor.

If he's as good as people say he is .... and there were a lot who thought he might jump straight from high school to the NBA before the age limit rule was passed .... then he could play at DeVry and the NBA would find him. They can scout high schools and Europe, they surely can find a guy at any D-I school in the country, including SMU or Baylor High.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the min. age for the NBA 20? If so, do we know if he makes the cut off after his first year or will he have to stay at least 2?

I think you're right Noonan but what's your source? This is all I can find on the subject...

That limit is anticipated to be 20 years and older OR two years since the player's class graduated high school -- whichever comes first.

This week's Sports Illustrated has an article on Scott Drew that says part of the punishment from the whole thing is a five-year probation for Baylor.

Recruits don't care AT ALL what city they play in. We are definitive proof of that fact.

Here's a story on ESPN.com about the NBA CBA that was signed last june.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=2091539

"With each side trading concessions, the union acquiesced to Stern's wishes and agreed to end the days of jumping from the preps to the pros -- the route chosen by LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Tracy McGrady and others. Players from the United States will now have to wait one year after the date their high school class graduates."

Can you imagine what it would have been like if we had Kobe or Lebron for a year?

Is there some sort of incentive we can offer kids of that caliber to spend there one year here? What if we offered to give them insurance against any injury that they might receive before they turn pro, call it our student athletic insurance program and bill it as a way to ensure the safety and security of the athletes that play for us, would that be a violation?

I wouldn't think it would cost too much for most of our players.
