Baylor gets first ever McDonalds All-AmericanBaylor’s top recruit, Demond Carter, was selected to the All-American Team.
Geez, what is up with Scott Drew? (that is their new coach right?) How in the heck is he able to get so many top notch recruits in such a short amount of time, and to Baylor of all places, while on probation!?!

On a side note, anybody need a patent attorney? Good, Bad...I'm the one with the gun.
Quality Coach-Check
Quality Coliseum/Practice Facility-Check Competitive Admission Standards Excellent Conference Affiliation-Check Baylor got some things to sell plus they didn't rip the heart out of the program by creating ridiculous barriers to competing at the highest levels of college Basketball. Their Model after the DP started on a solid foundation-SMU's didn't.
...all true, but wouldn't those also be true when applied to: K-State until this year, Mizzou Purdue (look at their performance, well, since we beat them in their own tourney) Penn State Oregon State Ole Miss DePaul Florida State hell, even Texas Tech... How many top 5 recruiting classes have the above 7 schools produced in the last 5 years? 10 years? And yet Baylor's rolling them out with Scott Drew right after the murder scandal? Maybe some tourney appearances, but given the above factors you listed, that should be a given. How many McDonald's All-Americans went to the above schools? Off the top of my head, I can think of one (Q Richardson, DePaul). They all have (or had) quality coaches, practice facility, ok admission standards at least for athletes, and the conference thing. And they're all in places better than Waco (except Tech). No, I think something else must be going on down I-35.
A couple of things....Baylor hasn't had a Top 5 class, not yet anyway. I think their incoming class for '06 is rated #21 at this point although they are looking to add 1-2 more players.
Another thing is that Demond Carter was probably a long shot to be on the McDonald's AA team when he signed with Baylor. He basically played his way onto the team with a strong senior season...this year his HS, Reserve Christian has played a high-profile schedule, lots of national tournaments that have gotten him a lot of exposure and he has done pretty well against some stout competition...also scored 74 points in a game, set the Louisiana HS record for 3 pointers, etc. Rivals had him ranked in the mid 20s nationally, then after he committed to BU, they downgraded him to the 90s and have recently moved him back up to #61 currently. Josh Lomers, BU's other '06 signee is actually ranked higher than Carter at #43. BU also had a McDonald's AA on the women's side...probably a first for them as well.
thanks for this great info, sic-em; rarely does one see an opposing fan come onto another fan site andmake such an effort at a classy post;
what I can't understand is how easily the green-eyed monster (jealousy) raises his ugly ugly head among so many mustangs (who by the posts in this thread admit that the SMU coach sux, the conference sux, the practice and game facilities suk, etc)
Lawrence Roberts from Lamar high school in Houston is who you are talking about. He was not a Mcdonald's All American but was one of the best players in the state coming out of high school and led Baylor in points and rebounds the season before he transfered.
Him and Emeka Okafor were both seniors and played in the same district in highschool- both top 5 teams in Houston. Of course Okafor had one advantage- John Lucas was his teamate. Roberts and Lamar lost to Bellaire and Okafor/Lucas in the playoffs but all three went on to rather impressive college careers with Okafors NBA career obviously taking off as well.
C'mon... just think what they could've accomplished had they given themselves a year off from basketball. They'd have two or three McDonald's All-Americans by now.
What will SMU bball look like next season....probably more of the same...mediocre play and a deceiving win/loss record.
