just noticed that Florida St QB Drew Weatherford has a younger brother named Joe Weatherford starting to get some recruiting attention. Father and Grandfather were SMU Football players.

I saw that -- he's getting some attention from some big-time programs, isn't he? Rivals isn't showing any schools now, but I read someplace (maybe on Scout?) that he's looking -- at least initially -- at places like Florida State (of course), Texas, Notre Dame, USC .... I don't know much about him.

I never went to SMU, but given the history of the program, I can't believe there are too many who find that funny.

Our program is starting to go uphill, the last thing we need is to start giving recruits money or gifts, we are past that as a program.

I don't think we are, we still have only had one winning football season, and our administration doesn't seem to know how to build winning programs without paying the players, might as well stick to what we know best.

Going in the right direction. Heck yes we are.

And PLEASE don't joke about these things. SMU can not do what some of the BCS people do.

The NCAA likes schools with HUGE alumni base and generate money in clothing sales.

Not SMU and one reason why we got the big kick in the rump.

Let Bennett build this team the right way.

Fine, build it the "right way" but even building it the right way will leave us at a competitive disadvantage to other schools. I would also reserve the statement that we are moving in the right direction until we have two successive years fo genuine improvement. I think we got extremely lucky in a couple of games last year and that has everyone excited, which is great, but i want to see some consistentcy in our winning before I declare the program as being back on track. If we don't do better with next year's schedule then we are no where near the right track.

In fact I would venture to say that if we are not 3-1 after our first 4 games then we are in deeper doo-doo than we were when Bennett was hired.

All of you need to relax...it was a joke! But a bigger joke is posting a thread about this kid...teams supposedly interested are USC, ND, Texas and Florida State? If that is the case than why would this kid even consider SMU? While my statement was a joke, in actuality the only way he would come here is if we paid him, so lets move past this kid and focus on the players SMU did get to come here.

His grandad (unfortunately deceased) lived in my building. His grandmother still lives here. I'd better get right to work on this.

his Dad went to Hillcrest. His brother gave SMU at least some passing interest and I'm told made at least an unofficial visit. Don't pay any attention to the schools a kid is interested in until he starts gstting offers and/or visits. If we had to recruit only the kids who weren't interested in Big Time Schools at this time a year there wouldn't be anyone to recruit. Even guys who aren't going to get ANY offers are CONSIDERING UT right now. Recruiting is a two-way process. We've got an in with this kid that should at least be followed up on until we are told No Thanks.

Absolutely right - excellent post. His brother DID have an interest, and DID take an unofficial visit. And you're right on with the idea that we need to stay on this kid until he says he has no interest.
