Grading the Mustangs
Today's segment focuses on SMU:

Final grade: C+

Why?: SMU did a nice job of keeping some talented local players at home. Garland's Tim Crosby, Scurry-Rosser's Phillip Burley and Denton's Anthony Sowe are all top-100 area caliber players. And Crosby and Burley in particular bring something very important -- skill players with the ability to make big plays.

Best prospect: Of all the recruits I met out of the 2006 class, none impressed me more than Phillip Burley. And I'm not talking about on the football field. His 6-5, 205-pound frame and 4.5 40-yard dash speed speak for themselves. But I'm talking about the way Burley carried himself during an interview. While it was a short amount of time, his frankness and positive demeanor were very impressive.

Sleeper: Kingwood linebacker Taylor Bon is a player the SMU coaching staff raves about. He has the size -- 6-3, 207 -- and the athletic ability to be a huge playmaker at linebacker. Put it this way, there is no player the SMU coaches are more excited about than Bon.

Pressure is on: Oklahoma City Putnam City athlete Bryan McCann is one of two 3-star recruits -- Burley is the other. McCann, who missed significant playing time because of a knee injury last fall, will be counted on to play cornerback and return punts and kicks.

Wasn't it McCann's shin and ankle that got hurt?

C+ isn't bad, but in the next few years once we reach a bowl game I think that grade will be a B-B+

I think that is a positive, that Burley interview sounds impressive, you love hearing a player talking about how good we are going to be and how he can make a big impact. I think McCann is gonna come in and surprise A LOT of people. I like hearing about Bon, that is good...

No remarks about WR Morgan Hudnall from Highland Park as 'local talent' coming to The Hilltop? Please.

You are right. If we want to get the "high profile" HP kids, we should make a big deal out of the players we do get from there. People like the Stafford's should be ashamed to live in the Park Cities after having their children go to a state school. But among current residents, SMU football just represents a driving obstacle to their Saturday afternoon galas and hair styling appointments.

I don't think this is true. I have been surprised in the past to see that people come out in droves to support SMU football if we're winning. And we don't have to be all world either.

Without knowing a thing about his playing ability, and whether or not he merits any mention, one reason that he could be getting no pub is that he's grayshirting and won't be in school until January.

Well then by definition SMU hasn't seen a drove in 20 years. Droves! Please.

In the past the people that came out in droves were from UT, A&M, TT, etc. SMU has never drawn well in the modern era. That's life. We do much better with a winner. Right now it is down right embarassing, but I recall in the 80's at an A&M game at Texas Stadium. Packed house. SMU up big and most of the SMU folks went to party. Only people left were A&M folks (easy to pick out). That left about 45,000 in the stadium.

Let me define "droves." Enough to fill Ford Stadium.

Even still, when have you seen this? You originally said "I have been surprised in the past to see that people come out in droves to support SMU football if we're winning. And we don't have to be all world either." We have neither been winning nor anywhere close to all world since Ford opened. In fact, I do not recall Ford Stadium ever being full of SMU fans except perhaps in the opening game versus Kansas. Every other time Ford has been close to full it has been vastly occupied by fans of the visiting team.

Playing ability. Hmm...did you watch the state title game between HP and Marshall? So what if he's not coming to SMU until Jan. '07! He's still committed to SMU.
