SMU Offers Dual Threat QB Justin Johnson

Postby Stallion » Sat Mar 11, 2006 4:36 pm

from Richardson Berkner. 6-1, 208 4.5. Likely to be highly recruited. Offers so far by SMU and Baylor but getting looks from almost all the BCS schools in the Texas and Oklahoma and beyond Also being recruited in Basketball. SMU's offer was in Football according to his own quote on Rivals. Would like to play both sports in college. Good enough in football to run for over 1400 yards from the QB position. He says most schools are recruiting him as an athlete. Good enough in basketball to lead his team to the State 5A Championship SemiFinals where they just lost to Plano. Texas Hoops has him as the No. 42 player in the state.

No Kidding....I mean if we give Ryan Hopkins a scholarship and we give Dement Jr a spot on the team why not give this guy a spot? SMU has to realize that nearly 99.99% of kids would rather play for a BCS school like Texas or OU than SMU so if we have any sort of advtanage in the recruiting game over these kids then SMU must spot it and exploit it.

Justing has a younger brother Josh, that is a running back for Berkner who also plays BB. So offer both and maybe we will get lucky.

You would get his parents working in your favor real quick with that move.

Justin is a great athlete. Won't play QB in college and is mostly recruited as a WR. Great runner who can't hit an open WR over 10 yards away.

A ton of college QBs have had a lot of sucess switching from qb to wr from college to the nfl. I am sure that sucess rate is equal in the transition from high school to college.

FYI Dement Jr. was a walk on player and had an amazing worth ethic and dedication to SMU and his team. It is one thing to give a scholarship for an inferior player, it is entirely another to have a walk on who busts his [deleted] for you every day for four years. Gotta love Mini Mike D.

Regarding this post--I have watched this kid at Berkner and he is very good. I like his attitude as well as his abilities. He would actually argue calls with the refs and they would change the call. I have never witnessed refs being intimidated by a high school player. I felt sorry for him that he was hurt and had to watch playoff game vs. A&M Consol. Berkner would have won that game and might have won a state title. They have been a doormat for 40 years and I was pulling for them.

Wonder if this guy knows Coach Gush, whose son plays at JJ Pearce?

Am I right that this would be one of those cases where he'd be able to play basketball only after football is over, since a dual-sport guy would have to count against the football scholarship list?
