RECRUITS AT RED BLUE GAME

Postby ALEX LIFESON » Sat Apr 08, 2006 9:19 pm

That was without question, the largest group of recruits at a SMU game. There were some very impessive looking athletes out there today!

I wandered past some of the recruits, and found a few names:

* The big guy that everyone was pointing to was Dallas (Skyline) OL Terrael Williams, who measured in at SMU's Junior day at 6-6, 407. Seriously -- that starts with a 4.
Rivals has him listing Oklahoma and Kansas State so far, and doesn't list a 40 time.
Here's the weird thing: he didn't look fat, at least not for a 400-pound guy. That's hard to say, actually, since I've only met two other guys who admit to being 400 pounds (one of whom played in the NFL for a while -- Aaron Gibson). But this Williams kid looks SKINNY next to Gibson. His shoulders are a mile wide, and his arms are very long, so (you might want to sit down to read this) .... he "carries that 400 pretty well."

* Williams spent the day hanging out with a little guy named Phillip Gates. I don't know if they're teammates, or where Gates is from. He looked tiny, though -- I'd guess about 6-3, 330 or 340. He looked like he could be Williams much younger brother. I've found no information on him.

* There was a lineman there whose jacket had the name "Suddeth" or "Sudderth" stitched into the back. Couldn't see his nametag to get a first name. I don't know what high school he goes to, although his jacket had a huge "L" stitched on one sleeve. I'd guess he was .... maybe 6-3 and 280 or so.

* Barrett Bufkin is a RB/LB at Dallas Jesuit. The school roster lists him at 6-0, 210 (presumably measured at the start of the 2005 season).

* Jordan Perry (6-2, 195) is a quarterback at Dallas Jesuit.

* There was a third guy there with Dallas Jesuit on his name tag, but the top half of the nametag was covered, so I have no idea who he was. Looked pretty big, though, so by looking at their roster, I'm GUESSING it might have been OT Tony Wurst (6-3, 285) or OG Cameron Downey (6-2, 270).

* There was someone named Mark Weber (looked like he might be SS/OLB size?) from someplace called "Paradise HS." I find nothing on him, and I have no idea where his school is.

* Richardson (Berkner) OL Josh LeRibeus (6-3, 321, 5.2) of also was there. Rivals says he's consider Boston College, Houston, Stanford, Texas A&M and Texas Tech, in addition to SMU.

* Travis Watson -- I think his tag said he's from Norman, Okla. I know nothing about him.

* There was a big guy wearing a Plano Senior High t-shirt with the number 75 stitched on the chest. His nametag said (I think) Carlos Cuevas, although rivals doesn't have that name in his database (I might be spelling it wrong). Pretty stout looking guy: I'd bet he was (is) 6-4, and .... 275 maybe? 280?

* Kevin Smart. Your guess is as good as mine -- don't know where he's from, or what position he plays.

* Anthony Washington is a RB/CB from Harker Heights HS. Rivals says he's 5-8, 178 and runs a 4.5.

* Zach Lambert (6-0, 260, 5.2) plays center at Buda (Hays HS), Texas. The 260 surprised me -- I didn't think he was that big.

* Isiah Oputa is a WR from Dallas (Wilmer-Hutchins). Rivals has him at 6-2, 180, 4.4, and listing Texas Tech as his only school so far.

Nice list, Pride! Thanks.

Did you really use the word "skinny" in a description of a 400-pound guy? Time for a new prescription on the glasses, don't you think?

The Wilmer-Hutchins WR sounds like he has good size and speed. Anyone know if he can play?

PonyPride, I remembered reading something about him a few years back. So I did a search for his name on the TexasHSFootball.com message board, and sure enough, I found some information. http://texashsfootball.com/board/index. ... =7303&st=0

As a sophomore in 2004, he was the largest football player in Texas (listed on DallasNews.com as 6'7" 390 lbs.) A few interesting quotes (remember, these are from two years ago):

I was told at the Denison game last night by a police officer about him and he said he is not fat he has some mobility but needs a little work on it. He has a muscular build to him and he is a man among boys out there head to shoulders you know.

That police officer told me that he was 6'8" 415 a couple of weeks ago when he seen him play.

I saw Skyline scrimmage N Garland and he is that big

That first quote pretty much backs up what you posted. The other two back up the size as probably being pretty typical of him. I've never seen him play, but with that size, I'd be willing to bet he's a good offensive lineman prospect.

On the Paradise High School kid, I find two Paradise High Schools. The first one is in Paradise, Texas (a small town NW of the Metroplex, near Boyd), and their football roster is at http://www.pisd.net/PISD/Athletics/Men/ ... arrost.htm. I do not see a "Mark Weber" but there is a "Matt Webber" and "Hudson Webber." The other Paradise High School is in California, and they do not list their roster on the internet.

Hope that helps out some.

Hmmmm .... it's got to be that town near Boyd. I'd be inclined to say it was Matt Weber, but I didn't think he was anywhere near that big. Then again, there were a lot of recruits there -- maybe I mixed him up as I was reading names as quickly as I could....

Perhaps the Hudson Weber kid goes by Mark.

Thanks for reporting on all the guys you saw there. It gives those of us who couldn't be in attendance a slight idea on who we may see in recruiting news soon!

Guy from my HS - Nick Parsons from Klein in Houston. Plays LB. We already have some good inroads in that district (Handy and Pellerin from Westfield, a DB from Klein Oak). The kid is academically strong and his dad is pres. of the boosters at Klein & could open up the school to SMU

Let's sign some of these thoroughbreads for the line, they could make a big impact. And I mean big..., any guys with high star ratings like 4 or 5 star, I know most 3 stars aren't out yet.

I coached at Wilmer-Hutchins the last year there was such a thing and know Isiah Oputa. Oputa is a very nice kid that with some direction could be a nice asset. My one concern is in that particular season I would call Oputa very soft. He didn't want to block anyone even if anyone was air. Also, if it came down to catching the ball and a big hit or ducking and dodging then he would definently take the last choice. He was a sophomore then so maybe he was just young and now that he is getting older he has gotten tougher, I hope that is the case because he is such a good person I want athletics to work out for him. I guess his senior season will be telling and I wish him nothing but the best.
