Menghe Nyam

Postby PonyPride » Tue May 09, 2006 6:39 pm

Menghe "Papi" Nyam has been released from his national letter-of-intent and is free to sign with another school.

The decision, SMU head coach Matt Doherty said, was a mutual decision between the school and the player, and leaves SMU with three available scholarships. Doherty reiterated that he is intent on building a program, not a one-year team, and therefore will not sign players simply to sign players. He could sign three players or hold the scholarships for next year, when could sign as many as seven players after a full recruiting season.

I openly admit I never saw a game in the last two years, so I can't speak to the difference between Coach Tubbs and Coach Doherty. However, if they are as different as many seem to think, this move is not a commentary about whether or not Nyam can play. Maybe he can, maybe he can't. All this means is that he might not be a Doherty-style player, and if that's the case, good luck to Nyam wherever he ends up. Hopefully this will allow Coach Doherty to sign an extra player (either this year or next) who fits his system perfectly.

I feel kinda bad for the kid, now he has to hope somebody else still wants him.

if that is accurate and we have "three available scholarships", I guess that means there are no silent self imposed penalties. I think Doherty better come up with 2 decent players somehow now or his program will be hurt in the long term. I know he is not building for next year 3 and 4 years from now you need a junior and senior class. We've never had any luck with juco transfers so i wont count on that. even the ones we get dont seem to ever pan out and become starters.

I'm gonna agree with abez -- prolly not any signees this year. Play with what we got, and sign more good players next year. Makes this season a little more dicey, but I trust MD.

good point. Supposedly Eustacy at S. Miss. recruited him, but it'll be interesting to see where he ends up at this late date. Maybe with his high school teammate who went to New Hampshire.

This is too bad, he seemed like he has an Isham type build. Hopefully we can get someone else to fill this scholarship let alone the other ones available. There are definitely still some talented players out there, I bet Doherty ends up signing at least 2 players coming into next year.

Better check the rulebook again. I highly doubt you can sign 7 players in one year...

What is that rule...4 max per year, 7 over a 2-year?

I believe that rule no longer exists. I know Bobby Knight was always against it and he, among others, seem to be taking full advantage of the fact it is no longer in place.

I think he will be hard pressed to come up with two players he will want to use 'ships on this season being that he entered the game so late. I could see a JUCO player being a possibility but I think most HS players of note are gone.

From what I understand our lack of JUCO success has alot to do with our admission policies, as Stallion would be glad to inform everyone about. It seems like all the guys we ever get are players that went JUCO bc they were not good enough to play D1, not bc they were non qualifiers. In most instances the reason any talented player goes the JUCO route is due to poor academics. Hopefully the loosening of transfer policies being discussed will actually have an effect on admissions.

I think bringing noone in for this class will hurt badly for this season obviously. We very well could be in store for another awful conference performance and less than stellar overall record with our loss of Hop and Morris, even though I think MD will improve us. That however does not mean that it will have a lasting effect for future seasons. A big, solid class next year with a couple JUCOs in the mix could easily supplant what we will not get this year. I think Tom Penders has shown how effective that can be. Now lets see if we are serious about getting these JUCO players into school....

Really? The picture I saw made him look more like a young Willie Davis, or a rangy defensive end/linebacker type. He's got some muscle.

And I'm not sure I feel sorry for him yet. If he signed because he wanted to play for Coach Tubbs, he could have called Coach Doherty and asked out. If that's the case, good luck to him, wherever he lands.

BTW HoopFan-I noticed that TexasHoops.com moved Chris Roberts up from the high 90s to the mid-40s as far as ratings are concerned. He's still availiable. But before the rerankings a few days ago each and every player ranked in the Top 40 had already signed. There are 2 or 3 reranked kids not signed in the most recent rankings that I haven't seen associated with SMU.

I think the chances of Doherty getting Roberts right now are slim, but I would like to see it happen. Open the pipeline to Dunbar. I said i thought Roberts would climb the rankings after the really good season he just had, but I had no idea he could jump that much. My gut tells me Doherty will go out of state, but we'll see.

Along with Arthur, that's two big recruiting failures in one day for Doherty. How many does this guy get before he's on the hot seat??
