Recruiting chat extra: Woodrow's Jack Hlavaty

Here's a leftover question from our recruiting chat that Sam in Dallas wanted a response to about another Woodrow Wilson linebacker:

Have you heard anything about Jack Hlavaty? Last year he was a great compliment to Sergio Kindle and piled up 100-something tackles himself. Yet, I can't seem to find anything on him...

Just talked to Woodrow coach Bobby Estes. He said that Hlavaty has been offered by SMU and that top academic schools like Stanford, Tulane, Holy Cross and California are interested in the 6-4, 225-pound standout who is in the top 10 overall in his class.

The question most recruiters are asking is where to play Hlavaty? He had 147 tackles at linebacker last season and that peaks the interest of Oklahoma State, Kansas and Kansas State. Others schools like TCU see Hlavaty as a defensive end and Horned Frog coaches have told Estes they would offer Hlavaty if he would learn to play with his hand on the ground.

Hlavaty will also play some tight end this year, so there could be some schools that will look at him on offense.

Darkhorse recruit who many seem to think will be a DE in college.

Heard he's very good, but overshadowed by teammates.
Any idea who has offered?

How does he remind you of Urlacher?

Cool -- what's his playing style like? How often have you seen him play? Are you a Woodrow grad (or have family there)?

I have never seen him play. Longhorn Fan brother saw him play last season and came away impressed. I have no connection to Wilson High.

I'm confused......he reminds you of Urlacher, but you've never seen him play?

Be careful with your comments about him. Recruits read the board. I am only helping recruiting. Don't chase off recruits like JT.

Which comments might scare him off? The ones that suggest he might move to DE in college? The one that says he's "very good"? Seems to me that everything said about this guy is quite complimentary. Even someone who hadn't seen him play could identify that the guy had good size, intensity and smarts. Sounds to me like everything said about him would encourage him to come to SMU if we offer him.

Curious. Have you ever read the DMN or do you just listen to what people say about it?

Next thing you know, McClown will say that he reminds him of AJ Hawk, [deleted] Butkus or better yet, Brian Bosworth. On a serious note, I think it's pretty cool that Woodrow is starting to get some players noticed. As abysmal as the program has been for the last 2 decades, it's good to see they are turning things around.

I bet he was friends with Jim Maddox, another WW grad.
