It happens every year to many football players on every level and its simply just unfortunate. Season ending knee injuries are common place and Allen, Texas running back Charles Opeseyitan is the latest victim of unfortunate circumstance.
"It's just one of those things that just happens," Opeseyitan said. "I made a cut and I just felt it pop, I knew something was up right away. I had the option of waiting until after the season on the surgery, but I want to go ahead and do it so I will I can go ahead and get it healthy."

Though Opeseyitan suffered a season ending injury that hasn't stopped the coaches from recruiting him.

"No schools have stopped calling or anything like that," Opeseyitan said. "No one has backed off, they understand these things happen and they know I will come back just as strong, if not stronger than before."

As a junior Opeseyitan carried the ball 145 times for 1,113 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also had 163 yards and one touchdown receiving.

"Kansas State, Purdue and Tulsa are my top schools," Opeseyitan said. "There are some others that I'm looking at like Colorado State and SMU, but those three are ahead

I watched the Allen/Berkner game from the sideline Friday night and got to spend most of the first half along side Charlie O. He is a very nice young man. It was easy to tell that he was very frustrated by not being able to play. I would love to see him in an SMU uniform next year. I hope his recovery goes well.

Somebody should have offered to fly him to Hawaii for a confab about why SMU is a great choice. Maybe offer someone's frequent flyer miles as an inducement. :wink:

Well apparently someone at Tulsa did a better job of selling than we did. I like Tulsa. Great school. I was accepted there and it is nice, however, how can we let a kid like Charlie O go to a CUSA rival when he is in our own back yard. SMU has more to offer. It is closer to home. Allen running backs have a history of success here. Come on SMU!

I think you are missing a couple key issues in your analysis here.

1. While we are giddy about being 4-3, including a loss to UNT, that is considerd an unacceptable, poor start at Tulsa. They are ranked in the initial BCS poll and are defending CUSA champs. We have come a long way, but we are not yet considerd in the elite of CUSA.

2. To me SMU's offense is not geared to getting top tailbacks (have not seen Tulsa this season so not sure how their offense has evolved since I last saw them). Granted D-Mart had a fantastic season last year but that was partly because of our inability to pass. RB's want to get behind a fullback and play smash mouth football, not have a bunch of delayed runs called for them as a compliment to a spread offense passing game. Also, I think our impressive offensive output in the air this season has lessoned our dependency on the running game further limiting tailback opportunities. Maybe we are becoming more appealing to receivers with our recent success?

Basically, while I am dissappointed we did not land the kid, it was certainly not a slam dunk choice for him to pick SMU over Tulsa. I don't feel anyone at SMU dropped the ball on him. If we would have landed him, it would have been Tulsa that dropped the ball in my eyes.

Unacceptable? Tulsa record through seven games under Steve Kragthorpe:

2005: 4-3
2004: 1-6
2003: 4-3

thats an oustanding analysis IMO. Players want to go where they can get the most playing time and reps/carries/handoffs/whatever. This reminds me of the story of the punter who didn't want to go to a school because they were too good and he wouldnt get the chance to showcase his skills enough ;-)

Apparently, Tulsa led all along because their coach was the first coach to teach him football.

Tulsa's Defensive Coordinator named Patterson. You didn't read the latest Rivals article very closely.
