Gilmer's Jamell Kennedy Verbally Commits to SMU

Gilmer senior Jamell Kennedy has given his verbal commitment to SMU.

Kennedy, a former quarterback, now playing wide receiver, chose SMU over UTEP, Rice, Tulsa, Wyoming, Arkansas State, among others.

Kennedy is 5-10, 165 runs a 4.4 40...

Jamell is not only a tremendous athlete, but also a good student with a 3.3. GPA---and even a better young man.

Former QB and now WR presumably to the newly arrived GJ Kinne (sp?) kid who is committed to Baylor where his father is now as a coach. He was the kid whose dad was the coach shot in Canton.

Notes from the only rivals report (in July) on this guy:

• .... put up great numbers as a junior as he ran for 562 yards and 14 touchdowns along with throwing for 1783 yards and 20 touchdowns.

• .... Those big numbers were a big reason why Gilmer went 10-2 last year, Kennedy was named district offensive MVP and second team all-state.

• .... as a sophomore lettered on Gilmer's 16-0 state championship team at WR/DB, he boasts vitals of a 200 pound bench press and a 360 pound squat max.

• .... (as of the time of the report) Texas, Oklahoma, Rice, Texas A&M and Texas Tech have all shown interest in the Gilmer WR....

• .... went to camps before his junior year at Baylor and Stephen F. Austin.

• .... attended camps this summer at Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Texas, Baylor, Rice and Texas Tech.

I included facts, and omitted his quotes, and commentary from the writer about how he might fly under the radar because of all the attention paid to his QB.

Sorry -- didn't mean to steal your cut-and-paste thunder.

Stats through 4 games (Gilmer 4-0)

Rushing 14 carries 101 yards
Receiveing 8 catches for 116 yards and 1 TD

Also plays CB, but no official stats on him.

Basically the Johnson brothers are the star of that show along with Kinne and Curtis Brown. Kennedy is a good player, just behind some tremendous talent.

I'm thinking about going to the Gilmer game tonight.

I'll watch for him if I do.

Anyways, another East Texas guy to SMU :D

Rivals has a new article on Kennedy that indicates that academics are what swayed him to SMU. Wants to major in computer science and says that SMU has one of the best programs around. He also likes Jerry Bennett. He says that he is very committed and doesn't plan to take other visits. Rivals rates him at 2 stars and 5.4, which makes him one of our better recruits over the past two years.

haven't really found a source that gives complete statistics on Gilmer yet but in addition to those stats from this year listed above Kennedy caught a 56 yard TD pass from G.J. Kinne last Friday. He had a 68 yard pass catch in the previous week which I'm not sure was reflected in those previously cited stats.

Rivals has 4 video reels on Kennedy mostly playing QB. Kid has some sick moves which reminds you of Ricky Wesson at QB or Mapps. Check out the start of reel 4 on about 3 scrambles and let's discuss.
