Great addition. Papa will be an outstanding player at SMU. Congratulations to Coach Doherty and his staff. They are assembling an excellent first recruiting class.

I thought I responded to this thread already. Oh well, I'll do it again!
Welcome to SMU Papa, I've already got some insults lined up for the opposition.

Way to go, Coach Doherty!
Some of the credit, I assume, also has to go to Bamba Fall -- hasn't it been reported that he and Dia are pretty close friends?
Welcome to SMU, Papa!

Found this report on GW Hoops message board.....they were recruiting him as well and most thought he was going to Louisville.
Papa Dia – Team Final (South Kent, CT 2007 6-9 220)
This big lefty was impressive yet again. He has very good size, but is also an excellent athlete. He scored quite often around the hoop and also from the wing. He has a very nice touch on his jumper (something not often seen from a man of his size). He also blocked a number of shots and grabbed plenty of rebounds. The one thing that still bothers me is that he loves using a fade away jump shot. I’m puzzled why a guy his size wouldn’t go at the basket every time he catches the ball in the post. That said it’s not a huge complaint because he can hit that shot. He just leaves himself no chance for an offense rebound if he does miss.

A 6-foot-9 guy who can hit a fadeaway?
Evokes images of the great Elvin Hayes -- still (with all due respect to Karl Malone, Charles Barkley, Kevin McHale, etc.) the best power forward I ever saw.

Papa is a skilled player. He has good touch and unlike a lot of the players from Senegal, his offense is ahead of his defense. The only knock that I have heard on him is that he doesn't always play hard. Coach Doherty will correct that.
The above poster is correct. Bamba had a lot to do with this. Papa and Bamba are from the same hometown of St. Louis. They have known one another for quite some time.
This is a good story of a young man picking the place that is best for him and not picking a school because of its name. Papa, like Bamba, showed a lot of maturity in not going to a school because of the conference, fan support, facilities, etc. He picked a school because of relationships, great education, Dallas, and Coach Doherty.
It is going to be fun to go to games on the Hilltop!
